Mamavation Mondays: Camping with small children and infants

When I was told who the guest was this week I immediately became super excited.  I love being outside, I love my kiddo – we enjoy hiking and camping.  However not everyone knows how to enjoy these types of pastimes as new moms or moms or more than one kid.  For me I turned to my midwife for a little advice on camping with a newborn because it was not something that I was 100% confident about as a newbie.  I hope this week’s guest can give you a shot of confidence to give the outdoors a try if you are not already there, or some tips to make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.

Special Guest: Erica Lineberry (@Cragmama)

We only get one shot on this journey called life, and Erica intends to make the most of it. One of her favorite passions is getting out and exploring this playground called Earth, that she believe God created for us to enjoy. During her pregnancy and her son’s first weeks she and her husband realized that they were at a life stage where many folks give up on adventure and play, and get locked into a rut of everyday living. But they wanted to do more than just “get by.”

Most days you can find Erica outside somewhere – while her favorite athletic passion is rock climbing, she also loves waking up to birds chirping and sun light filtering through her tent, as well as wandering around in the woods with a backpack on.  Her best ideas come to her during afternoon trail runs, and occasionally she like to pretend that she knows how to mountain bike and fly-fish.

“Over the course of my life’s journey so far I’ve been blessed to have encountered so many adventures.  Some are big and some are small, but they are always filled with joy, love, and of course loads of fun along the way! My goal at Cragmama.com is to become an online resource for fellow nature enthusiasts that believe starting a family doesn’t mean the end to outdoor adventures! I haven’t been a Mommy nearly long enough to qualify as an expert in the fields of wilderness, parenting, and rock climbing. Thankfully in addition to the many mistakes I’ve made along the way I’ve also stumbled upon some really good ideas that have worked out great for our family. And if they worked for us, who knows, maybe they might work for other families, too! Its my hope that you will find inspiration and motivation to continue in an active lifestyle throughout pregnancy and beyond!  Whether you need beta for your next climbing trip, a helpful tip for squeezing in some outside time in a day slammed with errands, or are looking for gear reviews on items to make outdoor kid travels run smoothly – take a look around, hopefully you’ll get some good ideas!”

Together Counts Finding Balance Twitter Party

A record has been broken ladies and gentleman.

I’ve never been asked to do three twitter parties for one brand in the span of a month, but I have now. Here are the dates for the 3 parties we will be doing for Together Counts on 9/28, 10/4, and & 10/27. This post is the first of three party posts. Please RSVP for each individually please. More information will be coming about the additional parties soon.

Together Counts is a nationwide program inspiring active and healthy living. The principle behind the program is Energy Balance, which means balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. Calories in, calories out. It’s that simple. Together Counts was started by The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a CEO–led organization, that is a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity–especially childhood obesity–by 2015. It’s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 160 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations. The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation promotes ways to help people achieve a healthy weight through energy balance–calories in and calories out. It focuses on three critical areas–the marketplace, the workplace and schools. You can see a list of their partners here.

The theme of this party is about finding balance. Healthy living isn’t about never being able to eat the foods you like. It’s not about starvation and deprivation. Eat what you want. Just remember to get enough activity to counterbalance the amount of calories you take in. Calories in and calories out. It’s that simple for everyone. Let’s discuss!

Mamavation Mondays: Blogs that Inspire

The nominations poured in.  The top 50 were picked.  You then decided.  We have some of the Most Inspirational Tweeps in Health and Fitness on the show for this week.  Have fun and be motivated by what they have done with their blogs and social media presence.

Special Guests: Alysa (@InspiredRD), Tony (@theantijared), Kelly (@According2Kelly),  and Emmie (@Skinnyemmie)

Alysa has always had a passion for food and healthy living.  She became a Registered Dietitian in 2002 after graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Nutritional Sciences.  After a short stint in clinical dietetics, Alysa realized that her passion was leading her to the wellness side of nutrition and fitness. She earned a personal training certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and later a group fitness certification through the American Council on Exercise.

“Take a new perspective on food and fitness.  Let it inspire you.  Appreciate the beauty of an artichoke.  Plant a garden.  Share meals as a family.  Play outside.”

Tony started his journey being 420 lbs.. When 13 years  he decided to finally lose his weight once and for all, his doctors suggested gastric bypass surgery, but he was too scared. Instead , he did something scarier – lose 200 lbs without a surgery. Tony is a chef and has been in restaurant industry for over 10 years. So he blogged and lost weight. He lost 221 pounds and right now is 198 pounds. He started working out to gain muscle. Every day he pushes himself to do hid best, keeping off the weight, building muscle and happy he can put on a seatbelt.

“I try to write about my past experiences. What I write helps me out a lot, and I think it helps others. The biggest thing about weight loss is that we should all know we are in this together. We struggle, but knowing we all struggle makes it easier.”

Kelly is a Cherry Coke drinking abstaining, crushed ice loving, world-traveling, bike riding, apron wearing, snowboarding, fabric obsessed, marathon training, disneyland loving, sparkle skirt wearing, surprisingly shy triathlete, REAL orange county housewife & mama of 3, with ADD crafting tendencies & an MBA degree. She is a mastermind behind Just Spotted, THE premiere family & kid oriented guide to living, visiting & dreaming about orange County. She also blogs about her real life adventures on according to Kelly.

“We can’t let fear & doubt prevent us from living a creative life – from “living our impossible.” we have to realize (even accept) that at the very heart of the matter, fear & doubt walks hand & hand with the creative process. you can’t have one without the other.”

Emmie started this journey very large. Size 32 large. This means she was almost too big to shop at the super plus size stores, very easily winded by half a flight of stairs, and her feet and legs were swollen a lot because of poor circulation. The goal of her blog is to find her Skinny Emmie and that includes getting healthy. She hasn’t been under 200 pounds since she was 13, so she is also trying to figure out what “Skinny” means for her.

“Becoming “Skinny Emmie” is about becoming healthy and happy. That’s it. If it means I’m 275 pounds, so be it- that will be my Skinny. If it means I’m 200 pounds, so be it. This is my project in feeling physically better, and healing myself emotionally from the invisible scars that I’ve accumulated over the years. Fat Emmie doesn’t even have to be Fat. If I get to 160 pounds and still have the same emotional baggage and outlook on life, I AM STILL FAT.”

Bears, Bugs, and Camping

Bookieboo and I both have some fond childhood memories of camping with our families. We often sit and reminisce about the crazy adventures that we had way back when. For years now we have been talking about taking the boys camping but have never moved past the “we should do this” stage. There was always some convenient excuse holding us back.

We're not in Kansas anymore . . .

The reality of the situation is that Bookieboo and I were both afraid. It wasn’t the bears or the bugs that we were afraid of (okay – Bookieboo was afraid of the bugs). We were afraid of how our oldest son would react to this very new and very different experience. You see, our oldest son has Asperger’s syndrome and sensory integration disorder. The experts say that he is at the “mild” end of the spectrum but he is definitely on it. Our son thrives on structure, order, schedules, and knowing exactly what he is going to be doing at any given point in time. While he likes surprises, he gets very anxious when faced with the unknown.

How on earth could we make a camping trip a pleasant experience for our son when Bookieboo and I didn’t even know what to expect or what to do? The last time either of us had camped was nearly 15 years ago and our parents handled all of the details. In the intervening years our version of “roughing it” became staying at a travel motel (you know, the ones with the doors that open to the outside world – that’s kind of like camping, right?)

After a particularly rough patch that our family went through we finally resolved to face our fears and go on that camping trip. Gear was purchased, reservations were made, and we even did a “trial run” in our backyard (yes, we actually setup the tent and spent the night as a family in our backyard). We prepared our son as best as we could and finally set off on our grand adventure. We went to Lake Casitas on the recommendation of a friend since it was less than an hour from home.

Do you know what happened? We had the time of our lives. Don’t get me wrong, we certainly had our moments of frustration, irritation, and of course threatening to pull the car over (what is a family vacation without Dad saying “If I have to stop this car . . .”) but that is all a part of the “family experience”. Our oldest son also had some sensory moments during the trip. We handled those situations just like we do at home – as a family supporting and helping one another.

Having the time of their lives

In the end, we learned a lot on this trip. We learned how to camp as a family. We learned how to cook in the wilderness (Bookieboo did an excellent job buying and preparing healthy, gluten free meals for us that remained very “campy”. By the way, planning gluten free meals in the great outdoors isn’t easy - Bookieboo). We learned that coolers with drains are very useful to avoid accidentally dumping the contents of said cooler onto the ground *looks around innocently*. We also learned that those 4-wheel bicycle car-thingys are really hard to pedal up a hill (one gear, really??). Most importantly, we learned that we can conquer our fears.

Healthy Camping Food? Thanks Bookieboo!!

Have your fears ever forced you into inaction? We found ourselves so scared that we put off even trying for far too long. How have you faced your fears recently?

Mamavation Mondays: Shoes, Glorious Shoes

One of the number one pieces of fitness equipment you can have are your shoes.  Not every shoe is the same though.  I recommend video gait anaylises a good deal when people are starting out looking for new shoes.  However I just go through a lot of shoes and know what works for me.  This week’s show has experts on the topic of these glorious pieces we put on our feet. They take a pounding, they help keep us well, they are to be taken seriously.

Special Guests: Monica Olivas (@runeatrepeat) and Christi Daugherty (@ChristiDarty)

Monica loves to run, but she also loves to eat. She has been running for almost 7 years now, but still finds it difficult to lose weight! Her blog http://runeatrepeat.com is all about running and eating in a fun way.  Weight loss is a priority to her, but so is health and happiness! She is dedicated to finding healthy foods that are delicious too.

Monica is a certified Personal Trainer and coaches an entry level 10K running group in Orange County, CA. Being a runner she knows great deal of the information about running shoes, so get your notepad ready for hands-on knowledge.

Christi Daugherty is a mom to 5, blogger, work at home mom and has a long history in the shoe industry. At 18, a new mom and college student got her first job as a shoe salesman. Her sister had started a new shoe store and needed help. Little did she know that she would be able to work with one of the most well known sales teams in the United States, headed up by her older sister and brother in law.

Christi has over 10 years in the Comfort Footwear industry. She worked with Sand Dollar Lifestyles, a well known chain of  Mom and Pop shoe stores in the south east. She has been in exclusive workshops with Joe Celzano from Clarks of England, Mephisto University and Merrell Footwear. Her specialty – finding the right shoe, with the right support for customers needs.

Brita Celebration During the Biggest Loser

Unless you are living in a cave somewhere in the Arizona desert, you’ve most likely heard of Brita Water Filtration Systems and The Biggest Loser. Brita is an official sponsor of the Biggest Loser and their water products are used there all the time.

When I started my weight loss journey (taking me from a size 22 to a size 6) one of the first things I did was kick the soda to the curb and drink more water. Yes, more water. And its a very simple thing to do. Water is such a precious resource. Nothing can thrive without it. Okay, maybe rocks. Fine.

Brita would like you all to join us on Tuesday, September 20th from 8-10pm EST for a party on twitter during the airing of the Biggest Loser. What are we celebrating exactly? Well, part of it is a secret. Shhhhhhh! (And because I’m afraid of the black men in suits I’m not saying ANYTHING…until the day of the party.)  And the other part I CAN tell you. Brita is all about water and health. Those are the two things we are focusing on during this party.
