Mamavation Monday: Genetically Modified Organisms

We as a community started talking about GMOs a little while back.  Thanks to Leah for educating us.  I am getting very good at understanding how to fight back on this important issue. Today’s Mamavation Monday Post and upcoming Mamavation TV show is to continue our GMO education.

What do we need to know about GMOs?

The most important thing people need to understand is that genetic modification is not the same as the kind of selective breeding farmers have utilized for centuries to improve their crops and livestock.  Historically, nature has created the variability in the gene pool and man has only nurtured and replicated the preferred change.  As a result, variation occurred in a very narrow range and never crossed species.  GMOs represent the first instance of man creating the variability and doing it outside the laws of nature by splicing DNA of different species together.  This can only be called experimental and we have no deep experience and understanding to draw on in order to assess both the opportunities and the threats resulting from this radical change in genetics. (Out of my interview with Kim Hack,  founding chapter chair of the American Institute of Wine & Food)

There are so many awesome sistas in our sistahood and this week we are proud to present you with our own  Kia Ruiz as an expert on GMO.

Special Guest:Kia Ruiz (@bodhi_bear)

If you haven’t met Kia, you are missing A LOT. She is one of the nicest people I’ve met.  She is amazingly good at everything she does. Have you ever done morning yoga after a late night out? It is an awesome start for the day and we were lucky to have the class taught by Kia last year at Fitcation.  Kia is a yoga instructor and also a biologist.

“We care for ourselves, we care for our environment. There is an intersection of the worlds of health/fitness/wellness and being green. I like this space – they are not mutually exclusive. I did 3 years of Ph.D. coursework in biology before a car wreck, my focus was on my physical recovery after that. I still enjoy teaching and sharing – this is that space.”

Kia Ruiz is a yoga instructor and green health/wellness advocate. She worked to a PhD candidacy in Biology at Florida International University focusing on environmental influences on amphibians (including environmental toxins) before a car accident abruptly ended that five-year plan. Kia taught Human Biology and Marine Biology while a grad student and still enjoys helping others learn about how their environment and the effects humans have on their surroundings and vice-versa.

These days you can find Kia advising and contributing to wellness and environmental non-profits, writing, taking pictures, blogging, and teaching yoga around the Front Range of Colorado and online. See her blog Bodhi Bear for a taste of her wellness journey and learning.

Check out their awesome website; it is quite entertaining, educational, and just cool. The story of Unreal candy is inspirational – with a teenager looking for something to indulge on without harsh chemicals, nasty GMOs, and hydrogenated oils. Reading Nicky’s story makes me happy that there are teenagers in this country that think about changing food industry for all of us.
