Protecting my Babies
Did you know that under Federal law, chemicals and other ingredients are not required to be listed except in food products? And did you know that there are 80,000 or more chemicals used in various products? And, did you know that the last time a law was created about this was in 1976?
The Mamavation Moms had a chance to chat with Carly from Healthy Child Healthy World, and we learned all sorts of interesting, enlightening, and somewhat frightening information. And then, I got angry.
Mostly, I’m angry because there are items that we are trusting companies to supply for us that are filled with dangerous chemicals and substances. And there is NO rule at this point forcing anyone to label what they’re including in their product. And unless we know the information about what’s included, it’s hard to protect our children — our babies — from things that can harm them.
Luckily, Carly gave us some tips on what we can do to protect our families. I knew several of the tips (eat more produce, avoid food dyes), but there were some that were new thoughts for me.
One such new idea for me was that of protecting our children from the gasses in mattresses. Last week, I shared that Naturepedic had graciously provided the three of us with mattresses for our children. But Carly went into further detail about why we need to be careful with the mattresses we have in our house. Basically, it boils down to the contents of the mattress (the foam, etc.) and the gas that can be released.
So, how can we protect our kids without spending an arm and a leg? Carly says that mattresses are the one place we should really splurge. But, if we can’t, then we should be sure that we air out any new mattress until the smells are gone, and we should get a mattress cover to create a barrier between our children and the possible emission of any gasses. Mattress covers can be found at most basic bed and bath or baby stores.
Join us on Monday night when we learn more from Carly about how to protect our children. The tips and tricks she has for us are really easy to grasp!
Since applying for Mamavation Mom, I’ve lost 15 pounds! But, the number on the scale is only a piece of what’s going on with me. I feel better in my clothes. I’m wearing clothes I haven’t worn in a long time. It’s like I can almost go shopping in my own closet since I haven’t seen or worn many of those items since before I was pregnant with baby #3.
I’ve also really started to see a change in my shape. If you’ve been hanging with me through this journey, you know that one of my goals was to be a stronger, healthier mom with guns to show for it. You just need to watch the video:
Have a great week!
