Being Called Fat Doesn’t Help Me Lose Weight Anytime Fitness

UPDATE: Comment moderation is ON. This post has received many comments from TROLLS and inconsiderate individuals calling me and my audience “fatties” “fat” “crazy” “overreacting” “racist” and the list goes on and on. If you are coming here to call us names, call ME names, promote your own blog, promote something I think is awful etc….it WILL be deleted and your IP address banned. My blog and therefore my rules. My community if full of overweight women struggling everyday to live healthier for their children. They don’t need anymore more abuse than they already receive. I will not tolerate any abuse toward my audience or myself. Period.

Uh oh, *Getting up on soapbox in a fit of rage…and hormonal because I’m pregnant so watch out*

I’m what you would call “formerly fat”. I was morbidly obese. A big girl. Someone who used to hide in my house and someone who NEVER went to the gym. When I lost all my weight, I did it at home all by myself. No one really helped me, other than Weight Watchers and Billy Blanks DVDs. (Update: Btw, these are NOT sponsors nor have I EVER been paid by either of these brands.)

I can tell you who DIDN’T motivate me to lose weight: elitist fitness people who would stare at me in disgust AND anyone who talked down to me about my weight

And yes, that happened. Frequently.

Obesity is a very serious problem in our society. It’s robbing people of life, energy, happiness and income. This is all true. And most of us have heard the statistics about how if you are overweight you are more likely to make less money than your colleagues of a normal weight. It’s not rocket science, it’s fact, and we discuss this all the time in Mamavation. In fact, this statistic was one of my primary factors in losing weight–because I didn’t want my kids to live through this like I had.

Now some people communicate this in love, and other people communicate this in disdain. You know how I said that elitist fitness people don’t motivate me to lose weight. Here is a perfect example of this–someone who is using this statistic and sensationalizing it to simply sell books. Here is the email I got yesterday:

Title: Anytime Fitness CEO says money is allergic to fat people

This is also a chapter title to his book.

Pardon me. This is my own sidebar after reading this title….WTF?

Body of Email:

Hi Leah,

Words you never expect to hear from the owner of the world’s largest coed fitness franchise are — working out sucks.  But this is no ordinary CEO and his book “Working Out Sucks” is no ordinary book. Anytime Fitness CEO Chuck Runyon’s first book, due out in December, is edgy and provocative and provides a blunt, modern-day take on health and fitness. It tackles societal influences (including Oprah and Apple), asks if parents of obese children should go to jail and raises eyebrows about smoking, seatbelts and much more.

Attached is a sneak preview of “Working Out Sucks”. I hope you will consider a piece on Chuck, his candid book, and how he’s evolved his entrepreneurial roots by building a 20 million dollar international business with a network of more than 1,700 franchises with such a strong following that members, franchise owners and employees are getting permanent tattoos of the company’s logo.

Thanks for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

I couldn’t get past the title of this email. Okay, now here’s the thing. I’m sorry, but when I see things like this, I automatically go back to how I felt years ago when I was morbidly obese. And people who said things like this were the LAST people I was listening to. They made me feel worse about myself, not better. They made me feel helpless, not empowered. They caused me to shut down, not open up. I can promise you, I wasn’t about to go to their gyms to workout while I was demeaned.

In my humble opinion, Chuck Runyon CEO of Anytime Fitness is part of the obesity problem, not the solution. He’s an elitist that looks down on “fat” people and wants to “show them the light.” But the reality is to help people who are overweight, you need to meet them where they are RIGHT NOW and encourage them. Not speak down to them and not make them feel powerless.

There is a very real bigotry problem in the United States and it’s against overweight people. And I can tell you that from a real life perspective, it’s real. People treat you differently when you are overweight. They discount you. They look over you. They don’t even notice you are there half the time. OR they say rude things about you behind your back and sometimes even to your face. And the saddest part of all, It’s socially acceptable. It’s okay for us to do this because “fat” people have a choice and no one feels sorry for people who have choices.

I say bullshit. Bigotry is bigotry. And people who talk like this only make the problem worse, not better.

*Stepping off soapbox*

If you would like to tell Chuck Runyon CEO of Anytime Fitness what you think about his book, you only need to tweet @AnytimeFitness to let him know. I’m not reading it. And I’m not ever going into an Anytime Fitness. (I’ve never seen on in California before anyways.) But that’s just me.

Mamavation Mondays: Spending Time Outside with Small Kids

I love the goal of our guest this week.  She is a nature enthusiast and wants to share that love with her audience and how they have their young families interact with the world.  We all do not live in places where nature is thought of as easily accessible.  It is accessible though with a little bit of creativity even when you are pregnant or have a very young child.  You just need a few tips if you do not know where to start out.  My midwife gave us a great tip when we had a newborn and were preparing for our first camping trip: do not go to a higher elevations, stay below the foothills for ear sensitivity.  For us that meant staying at 5400′ and not going to the 8000′ spot we were planning on.  We headed to the grasslands instead of the mountains – we would never had thought of that.

I am thrilled to hear what words of wisdom Cragmama will be sharing with our audience on Monday.  Small tips can really help your family get ready to play outside and enjoy yourselves.

Special Guest: Erica Lineberry (@Cragmama)

We only get one shot on this journey called life, and Erica intends to make the most of it. One of her favorite passions is getting out and exploring this playground called Earth, that she believe God created for us to enjoy. During her pregnancy and her son’s first weeks she and her husband realized that they were at a life stage where many folks give up on adventure and play, and get locked into a rut of everyday living. But they wanted to do more than just “get by.”

Most days you can find Erica outside somewhere – while her favorite athletic passion is rock climbing, she also loves waking up to birds chirping and sun light filtering through her tent, as well as wandering around in the woods with a backpack on.  Her best ideas come to her during afternoon trail runs, and occasionally she like to pretend that she knows how to mountain bike and fly-fish.

“Over the course of my life’s journey so far I’ve been blessed to have encountered so many adventures.  Some are big and some are small, but they are always filled with joy, love, and of course loads of fun along the way! My goal at Cragmama.com is to become an online resource for fellow nature enthusiasts that believe starting a family doesn’t mean the end to outdoor adventures! I haven’t been a Mommy nearly long enough to qualify as an expert in the fields of wilderness, parenting, and rock climbing. Thankfully in addition to the many mistakes I’ve made along the way I’ve also stumbled upon some really good ideas that have worked out great for our family. And if they worked for us, who knows, maybe they might work for other families, too! Its my hope that you will find inspiration and motivation to continue in an active lifestyle throughout pregnancy and beyond!  Whether you need beta for your next climbing trip, a helpful tip for squeezing in some outside time in a day slammed with errands, or are looking for gear reviews on items to make outdoor kid travels run smoothly – take a look around, hopefully you’ll get some good ideas!”

Moving Forward

I’m going to let my hubby go first this week as his feelings will help shed light on a little bit of what I’ve been feeling and going through this week.

This week was what I am going to call a work in progress. I am slipping into some old habits. Spontaneous eating, sitting when I could be doing chores or creative endeavors, and a negative attitude.
The last two days I began to get out with my son more for walks and really focused hard on creating meaningful classroom experiences for my students. It’s all about replacing food with social experiences and realizing that not only will I be healthier physically, but also mentally.
-JD

Let’s start with the positive and how things have been going this week for me.  I have been getting my steps in easily everyday this past week.  I’ve figured out some easy and quick fixes to squeeze extra steps in I talk about on the vlog.  Not to mention with the exception of maybe one day this week my DS and I have gone for a long stroll around the neighborhood and to the park, sometimes dad and even Grandma joined us.

While I didn’t show any weight loss this week I honestly wasn’t stressing about it because I know that number was tricking me.  Earlier in the week I was weighing in much lower.  I’m pretty sure the finger can be pointed at some stomach issues I just so happened to be experiencing Saturday and Sunday all day.  Relief has set in and I’m happy to say I’m at least back down to where I was last week, but shhh… you have to wait for the actual number until Monday night.

Lastly, I get a little emotional this time of the month, you know…  Anyhow some of the, well, bad habits JD was discussing really hit me hard. I was feeling a little bit glum last night and thankfully I’m happy to report no Emo eating.  I recognized what was going on and didn’t fall into my pattern.  All is well today and we are moving forward. Wish him and me luck.  If you have a moment reach out to the Mamavation men too on Twitter and Facebook.  I think they need to know the support is there for them to and everyone is anxious to see them be successful as well.  It’s also nice to say hey, your accountable too!

Weekly Weight Loss: Kelly: 1.6 lbs. gain & JD: .8 lbs

Total Campaign 10 Weight Loss: JD 5 lbs. & Kelly 6.8 lbs.

Total Weight Loss: Kelly 13 lbs.

Thank You to our sponsors for this campaign:

EASPORTSActive and Omron Fitness.  Each one is playing a huge roll in our goal to get active and healthy.

Also a Huge Thank you to all the Coaches: Leah @BookieBooAlysa @InspiredRDPete @PeteCohen_, and Drill Sergeant Alarik @gruntstyle.

Find Your Fit in Fitness

So far during this Campaign I’ve lost 9.4lbs, but 33lbs since having this baby…WooHoo!!! My husband, who had given up the thought that he would ever lose any weight is down to 211lbs, that is 14lbs!

It’s important to give ourselves props about losing weight. No matter how little, big it is, a loss is a loss. If you throw yourself a party for every ounce then you look forward to every single ounce.

This week I am focusing on Fitness. Fitness is huge! Okay..so are Nutrition, Sleep, Support, Water…there is a huge list. But right now it’s fitness I’m talking about.

I was sick last week, I had dental work, it was rough. But I kept up with my workouts. I tried to make every activity count. A few weeks ago I tweeted that it took me 2000 steps to clean my bathroom. The reason I was able to rack up so many steps is because I purposely tried. I made trips back and forth between my laundry room and the bathroom, I did the dishes, I went to the basement several times, I sorted a load or two of laundry…I am usually the person that goes from point A to point B, not the one that hits point C and point F before coming back to point B. I’ve been working on retraining my thought process.

In my head runs a continuous stream of “Make those steps Count” and “Walk with Purpose”. If I’m on the treadmill I try to go further, faster, and work harder. If I’m doing squats and lunges I add weights because they are easier if I don’t. We might think that because we are moms that we just don’t have time, but we do, it’s just a matter of prioritizing. I can get my 10,000 steps a day in 60 minutes of purposeful walking and doing my every day stuff. It is almost like a game for me now to see how fast I can do it or if I can get all my steps in as aerobic steps.

That is how I fit my fitness in. How do you fit it in?

I work in an office for almost 13 hours a day. My office has no windows and I don’t leave my office area. I’m actually locked in, well the door is locked on the outside so no one can get in. When I get home my health and fitness is the last thing I am thinking about. I’m actually thinking sleep. This week I have 40 hours overtime and it sucks. I have to workout in my down time. I have a treadmill in my office and I am finally using it. I’m past that funk where I was just tired all the time and didn’t want to do jack squat. Now I have energy, drive, goals, ambition.

Thank you to our sponsors EAS Sports Active and Omron Fitness
And Special thanks to Leah @BookieBoo, Alysa @InspiredRD, Pete @PeteCohn_, Drill Sergeant Alairk @gruntstyle, and all of you in the the Sistahood and those thinking of joining!

Random Thoughts

I think having the tuesday blog is the hardest one because we talk so much monday night at Mamavation TV I never know what to say on Tuesday… Crazy right? But any who…

My week was decent I had a loss but I had this huge number I wanted to reach this campaign and a 1lb loss wasn’t gonna get me where I wanna be, But Leah put it into prespective for me… I’ve lost 58lbs in a few short months… HELLLO 58lbs is HUGE!!!!!!!! Stop worrying with the small number and focus on the big picture. So that is my mindset for now because I am a BookieBoo Badass and I am Gruntstyle Strong! This week I did alot of thinking and worrying really,  My brother went in for his weight loss surgery on tuesday (he had the duodenal_switch which is the hard core one) and then got a an infection and I will honestly say I am scared for him and hope and pray this works for him. But I see so many chose Surgery over the “natural” way. Im not saying the surgery doesn’t work and for some they need it but I just don’t know I think there should be more that goes into the before surgery I mean I know there is but I think if we as a world would stop trying to fast forward everything it would be better. We are always so rushed,

The holidays are quickly approaching and I know for alot of us its a scary time because Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years are huge eating events. I mean these are the holidays where the deserts are the meals for alot of time especially at the parties. But if you go into the season with a plan you can conquer the holiday season and not gain back everything you worked your butt off the whole year to lose. We decided as a family we were going to do more family things over the holidays. Decorate together, watch all the holiday movies, have family game nights etc all things that can be done and actually help lose weight. Instead of chips we eat popcorn or fruit. I am really looking forward to spending time with the family and unplugging a bit during that time they are growing up so quickly and in a few years its gonna be the opposite Im gonna be begging for time with them and they arent gonna wanna hang out with Mommy and Daddy..

Alright so now about David, I really dread this part every week almost as much as the video she makes me do. But I had a good week, as long as Megan makes the meal plan and keeps tabs on me during the day Im less likely to cheat. It will be interesting this holiday season trying to keep on track and not over do. Luckily we don’t do many family gatherings or parties. Im still learning lots and still can’t do a jumpsquat but other than that Im on track and down 2 more lbs!

Quaker Oats & Bob Harper Team Up!

On October 29th Quaker Oats celebrated National Oatmeal Day with the first-ever Quaker Oats-Mobile tour, an on-the-go food truck created to deliver a delicious super grain breakfast of Instant Quaker Oatmeal for free throughout Chicago. Quaker Coach and celebrity fitness expert Bob Harper rode shotgun as he helped dish out one of his favorite breakfasts to consumers and shared tips on how to get National Oatmeal Day – and every day – off to a great start. Those outside the Chicago were able to join in the celebration too by logging onto www.NationalOatmealDay.com to  “get in line,” for the virtual Quaker Oats-Mobile and enter for a chance to win a year’s worth of Quaker Instant Oatmeal. Each super grain serving of Quaker oatmeal helps provide energy, fiber to fill you up and at least one serving of whole grains – a great first step towards meeting the recommended minimum of three daily servings of whole grains for overall good health. In addition to its many benefits, oatmeal contains soluble fiber that has been shown to help lower cholesterol when eaten daily as part of a heart-healthy diet.

While in Chicago Bob made a special visit to workout with his Quaker Oats friends.

Afterward Bob took a brief rest to fill me in on how we at Mamavation can benefit from eating oatmeal to sustain our work outs.  He was so excited to share his tips and chat it up about Crossfit and his tattoos.  We started out by talking about the last episode of The Biggest Loser when he came to Texas and rode the mechanical bull. I was complimenting him on his bull riding skills and his one word to describe it was, “OUCH!” I really wanted to interview Bob because every now and then I will catch him talking about Crossfit on Facebook and I was so tickled he was trying it! He told me, “I’m not trying Crossfit sweetheart, I’m doing it!” He loves it and finds it very challenging. Crossfit has now become one of his favorite things to do.

One of the main tips that Bob shared was how many people are in the situation of needing to lose weight, are on a budget and have time constraints. Breakfast is so important to starting your day because you need that fiber and a good source of complex carbohydrates and what is the number one choice?  People are choosing oatmeal time and time again. Bob loves to eat the same thing all the time but says Quaker Oats is the perfect option for those people who get bored with eating the same thing. Quaker Oats offers a large variety of flavors.  What about oatmeal after a work out?  Bob thinks it’s excellent! When you have done those Crossfit classes and you have lost glycogen sources, you need to recover with protein and a complex carbohydrate like Quaker Oats oatmeal will only benefit your body.

If you are looking to find the perfect time of day to work out, guess what? Only you know what that time of day is because it’s best to work with your optimum level. If you are not a morning person then working out in the evenings may be your optimum time. You have to do what works for you. Bob loves a good morning work out! He starts out at 5:30am with a Crossfit work out before he goes off to work. You have to remember how good you feel after that work out to remember what keeps you going.

For you runners out there Bob is all about getting that complex carbohydrate a good 45 minutes before that race. For the longer runs keep your body hydrated and keep that sugar going such as eating orange slices. Stretching out after a good work out is very important. Be sure to use a foam roller and if you need to find out more information about proper techniques you can find out more and even purchase a foam roller from his website.

Let’s talk tattoos! His very first tattoo was a rose on his back with an Asian symbol that meant body and soul. He has since had it removed and it’s now covered by a sugar skull. None of his tattoos have significant meaning he just likes them. In fact he prefers the “old school” tattoos. However, he hates the way it feels when he gets them. He’ says he’s going to stick to his arms and his back only. He is so nice to talk to but I’m guessing it would be a whole lot different if you got to work out with him.

Bob and Quaker Oats didn’t want you to leave this post empty handed! In fact they would like you to share your comments about  How you get a super start to your day?

Mamavation Mondays: Diabetes Prevention

November is National Diabetes Awareness month.  Mamavation is in the fight and will be having a Fit2Fight Type2 Diabetes Twitter Party on 16 November where the grand prize winner will be awarded and elliptical trainer.  Type2 diabetes affects over 28.5 million adults and children in the US alone.  Please join us this month with this campaign.  Begin with your participation in this week’s Blogging Carnival and come to our show on Monday for our special guest who will talk about nutrition and how to prevent this disease.

Special Guest: Mark Macdonald (MarkMacdonaldVN)

Mark Macdonald has been a pioneer in the nutrition and fitness industry for over 20 years.  He is the creator and CEO of Venice Nutrition, and author of the NY Times Best Selling Book, Body Confidence.

He opened the first Venice Nutrition Consulting Center in Venice Beach, California, in 1998.  Since then, the company has grown to include more than 350 centers, 4,000 nutrition coaches, and 250,000 clients nationwide.

Mark’s big lesson in nutrition came when he finished college and stopped playing soccer.  Despite the lack of activity, Mark continued to eat the food he was used to: fast food, pizza, and ice cream.  He realized that without constant exercise, his body became a fat storing machine and before he knew it, he had gained 60 pounds of body fat in a 6 month period.

Over a four year period Mark read every fitness magazine, every nutrition book, and tried nearly every natural supplement on the market.  He recalls, “I kept searching for answers because while I looked great, I felt horrible.  I lived for my ‘cheat days’ and was grumpy six days a week and happy the one day each week that I ate carbohydrates.  It was not the life I wanted, and I worked hard to find a better way.”

Mark is frequently featured as a nutrition and fitness expert on Star 94 in Atlanta as well as Fit TV.  Television personality Chelsea Handler is not only a client – she also wrote the introduction to BODY CONFIDENCE.

We’re Halfway There…

It’s Wednesday night as JD sneaks in to come snatch my son off me to put him to bed.   The last couple weeks he has been quite clingy and refuses anyone, but me to put him to bed.  I don’t blame him, with the late hours and early mornings that have filled the past 2 weeks I feel like I have only seen him a couple hours durning the week.  Makes me sad, but I know winter and Thanksgiving break are soon on their way.  Tonight was supposed to be date night, but I passed out and thankfully when I awoke remembered I had my Mamavation post due.  Thankful that I started it early in the week.

Despite my busy schedule I have managed to stick to my meal plan and exercise.  This feels like a huge accomplishment, and for that alone I am thankful for this opportunity.  Building these habits now means when someone isn’t watching anymore I will already have practiced the new healthy way and long forgotten, we can hope, the lazy habits.  I am inching closer to my goal of 15 lbs. this campaign.  With just 3 weeks left I have a little over 2 pounds to lose each week.

Alysa@InspiredRD has provided me with new ways to eat and I’m actually really enjoying it.  I won’t lie I was a bit worried about the Meal Plans.  Wasn’t sure which kind of crazy things she’d throw at me.  Nothing on the plan I didn’t like.  In fact now that we are creating our meal plans on our own, they look quite similar to hers.  Pete @PeteCohen_, has reminded me of some very helpful ways to work through the cravings.  Drink water when you feel hungry and wait it out.  Sometimes hunger is really thirst.  My favorite though is self-talk.  I’ve said it before, but it has really helped me and JD to make it through some tough times with food and even exercise (I shaved 6 minutes off my 1 mile time by setting mini-goals throughout my path). Drill Sergeant Alarik@gruntstyle has made working out, dare I say, fun.  He has so many new ways to combine strength and cardio using little or no equipment. Daniel’s even thrown in some EA Active (II)too.

Weekly Weight Loss: Kelly: 1.8 lbs. & JD: 1.4 lbs. gain

Total Campaign 10 Weight Loss: JD 2.8 lbs. & Kelly 6.8 lbs.

Total Weight Loss: Kelly 13 lbs.

This week has been a little tougher for me. I blame it squarely on my state of mind revolving around Fall, my birthday, and Halloween. To me, this time of year represents letting go and celebration. I need to find a way to separate this from over eating. I have done a bit of brainstorming this week and found that if I keep myself busy with creative work it takes my mind off of thinking of social eating situations to put myself into. Stay tuned for an update next week to see how I get back on track. -JD

Get On with Your…Self

As I take my place on the treadmill I glance back to make sure the swing is still swinging. I’ve finished nursing the baby and placed him in the swing, I’ve started a movie for the toddler and I am ready to go.
I put my headset on, turn on motivational movies on my phone and crank up the speed to race through my hour long walk/jog. I know that I have about one hour to get my 10,000 steps in a day. I can’t rely on anyone but myself to get those steps in. I know the only way I can get them in is to do it all at once.

Being a Mamavation Mom has taught me that I have to change my way of thinking and manage my time, even if that means cutting back on my social media time. It is all about finding a balance. As a mom that is nursing I find myself sitting a lot so I have to make my workouts count and that is why I love GruntStyle workouts, EA Sports Active and my Treadmill. Focus is really my key to success. Today I was able to push my Aerobic steps up from 6,000 to 9,000+ thanks to Omron Fitness and proper placement of my pedometer now that my pants don’t fit anymore.

Halloween is over and I wasn’t tempted by the candy, partly because I had some dental work gone awry that day, but why throw all my hard work down the drain for some candy. I’m working hard, I am making some big changes and I am looking like a whole new woman.

I had given up on losing any weight a long time ago. I was so set on remaining this size that I tossed all my smaller sized clothes about a month ago. I will admit I was not excited to have to workout, change my eating habits or get 10,000 steps in a day. I still fill really worn out doing most of these things, but I also haven’t been feeling well since this campaign started. I am however, reaping the benefits and enjoying the energy and happiness that Megan is experiencing. It feels good knowing she notices things changing as much as I have. I’ve been looking at photos from just a few months ago and I don’t even recognize myself. I’m finally excited and very glad I gave up my soda habit to do this.

Thank you to our sponsors EAS Sports Active and Omron Fitness

Giggles, Sweat, and Tears

Yup that is what makes up this week. We’ve shared giggles as you’ll see in the Vlog, Sweat and Tears…. This campaign has been so different for me. Its alot harder than my campaign 9. But I think my body is struggling with me and trying to figure out is this a fad or is this an actual change? Its also alot more work than last campaign because I have to put on my brown round and be Drill Sergeant and make sure David gets his stuff done and stays on track. He is my oldest child lol, and if he’s away he is alot more tempted to partake in “illegal products” (soda, chips, junk). But we are trying to work together… We still can’t workout together it just doesn’t work for us because of our schedules and we are too competitive with each other… Getting the hang of the new diet we are doing with the kids is hard too but it will all flow smoothly soon. They are Gluten Free and Casein Free now….

 254.6 which means…… 58lbs!!!!!!

David’s turn… Its been a rough week here getting everything accomplished but Megan is riding my butt to keep me on top of things and I’ve lost some weight this week so I guess its worth it. Jump Squats are not my thing, Knowing that certain foods are no longer allowed in the house makes it harder because they are the ones that creep into my mind but Megan has the nose of a blood hound so I can’t even think about cheating or sneaking she’ll know…

160 which is down 2 more lbs!!!!

Well here is our Giggly Vlog for this week…. Keep in mind that it was late and we’ve had a really rough week with the munchkins and stressed out to the max so I think we are starting to crack a little lol…
