Disney XD’s Pair of Kings & Geno Segers

My seven year old and I watch a lot of TV, and one of the shows we’ve recently begun watching is Disney XD’s Pair of Kings (Mondays at 8:30 EST). If you’ve never seen the show, then now is the time to start. The third season begins Monday, June 18, and Geno Segers promises me that it’s going to “rock.”

Geno Segers as Mason in Pair of Kings

Segers plays Mason Makoola, the royal advisor and guard to the twin kings, Brady Michel Musso) and Boomer (Doc Shaw). His daughter is Mikayla Makoola (Kelsey Chow), and they live on the mystical and uncharted island of Kinkow. In the third season of the show, Brady has left the island, and Boomer discovers he has another brother, Boz (Adam Hicks).

“Boz was the kind of guy that thought he was alone in the world, then he finds out that he has a brother,” Seger said. “So, he’s getting used to the idea of having a brother. Boomer knew what it takes to be a brother, and he’s having to teach Boz the Bromandments.”

I asked if Brady’s departure would mean that Boomer is the rightful heir to the Kinkow throne, but Segers told me, “I’m not going to share that right now. It’s a very interesting story. It’s something you really have to tune in to on the 18th to really find out…it’s very interesting and it’s borderline soap opera-esque.”

Pair of Kings is geared toward teenagers, but often, younger children, like my daughter, watch the show. Segers explained that the brothers and other citizens of Kinkow are constantly learning universal lessons that apply to all kids. It doesn’t matter if they’re in Los Angeles, Chicago, Asheville, or this mystical island; all kids are faced with the same basic obstacles of life: making good choices, being responsible for their own actions, and learning to tell the truth.

Segers is comfortable working with kids and talking about making good choices. He was once a high school algebra and physics teacher, and his foundation, Hold it On the Road, works with third and fourth graders to teach them how to make decisions today that will help them tomorrow. Segers said it’s important for children (and all people) to have a “Plan A.”

“Have something you do while you work on your hobby – which is your dream,” he explained. Anyone can have a dream, but if they don’t do something to support themselves while they work toward that dream, they’re just asleep.

A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Segers misses the barbeque, the smell of freshly cut grass, and NC’s four seasons. “I miss those seasons,” he said, “because I can smell fall coming into a football season.” For Segers, LA is just a different atmosphere, and you can’t understand the differences from North Carolina until “you get out of it.”

“You can be in LA, drive two hours, and because of traffic, still be in LA . . . people think rush hour traffic is bad in North Carolina. They don’t know anything about rush hour traffic. I miss the freedom of actually going ten miles in ten minutes.”

While he may miss the easy-going pace of North Carolina, he does enjoy his time on Pair of Kings where he says the cast is like a family. “We genuinely enjoy each other’s company.” He explained that this type of community only comes around once in a career, and he’s really happy to be a part of Pair of Kings.

Catch Segers and the rest of the cast in the season 3 premier of Pair of Kings on Disney XD (Monday, June 18). He says, “You’ve gotta stay tuned to what’s going to happen in the third season because it’s gonna rock.”

California Strawberries: More Than Just Tasty! (Giveaway, too!)

Recently I had the opportunity to join nine fellow bloggers on an exciting and informational retreat to learn all about the strawberries grown in California. We were able to see how they are grown, packed, shipped, sold and we even got a little peek at the research being done to benefit both consumers and farmers. I also got to eat a few strawberries here and there, as well.

One of the things that really stood out for me during the trip was learning about the health benefits of strawberries. Most of you probably already know that strawberries are high in vitamin C and low in calories, but there’s more to them than that!

  • The potassium in strawberries helps control blood pressure and fight stroke.
  • They contain fiber, which is helpful for weight control and relieving constipation.
  • Women who consume more strawberries are found to be less likely to develop dementia later in life.
  • Phytochemicals found in strawberries help prevent cancer.

Strawberries are quite the overachievers, aren’t they?

If you can’t get your hands on fresh strawberries all of time, that’s okay because frozen strawberries are just as nutritious. Even freeze-dried strawberries can be beneficial. They lose a minuscule amount of the vitamins, but the fiber, anti-oxidants and phytochemicals all remain intact.

Strawberries are on the lower end of the sugar scale compared to many other fruits, but you’d never be able to tell by their taste. They’re sweet enough on their own that I don’t have to add a bunch of sugar to any of the dishes. Occasionally I might sprinkle a little stevia into a recipe, but most of the time it’s not needed at all.

How can you get more strawberries into your diet?

I truly feel that the best way to eat a strawberry is to eat it fresh, but there are other ways you can get lots of strawberries into your diet without getting all straw-berried out.

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal, cereal, pancakes, smoothies, crepes and waffles are all very compatible with strawberries. Experiment and see what your favorite combo is.
  • Snacks: I love to stir cut-up strawberries into some plain yogurt, or have them on top of a piece of toast with almond butter.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Try them in a salad, on pizza, or as a fresh salsa on top of fish. They also pair well with pork.
  • Dessert: Sorbet, shortcake, pie, mousse, ice cream, cakes, the possibilities are endless. Get creative with strawberries, either as an ingredient or a topping, or both!

The California Strawberry Commission has plenty of recipes available on their website. You can also find plenty of inspiration by searching online, or browsing pinterest. Or get creative and make up your own great dishes!

Tiny Love 3-n-1 Rocker Napper Giveaway

On May 24th I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. We’ve been calling him #babybookieboo on twitter and Facebook. And he’s famous. No, really. He trended on twitter the other day. The only other baby that has trended on twitter is Beyonce’s baby.  I actually like having something in common with Beyonce OTHER than the size of my ass.

Okay, back to the point. After my second son, I thought I was done with having babies. I lost 70 lbs. and got into a size 6. I was looking good. Mamavation was taking off and I was very busy. Actually, busy doesn’t describe it. I was going non stop. And then suddenly I got the urge to bring another life into the world. And it wasn’t just an urge. It felt like a calling. It totally shocked me because it wasn’t in the “plan” we had. In fact, I actually threw most of the baby supplies away, including giving away my breast pump. *face palm* So I didn’t have many supplies. And I lucked out because some great brands started reaching out to me when they discovered I was about to have a baby and one of them was Tiny Love. Tiny Love reached out to me to offer me their 3-n-1 Rocker Napper, I was like THANK YOU! I didn’t have anywhere to put the baby for naps in the front room yet.

But I was worried. My babies never want to be put down. I mean ever. So after the BIG day, we tested it out. And look….I know you can’t hear this but the silence said it all. Okay, fine I know babies sleep more in the first two weeks of life, but he’s up now and he’s still sleeping in it. So SCORE!

There are a bunch of other handy dandy features beyond just letting him sleep in it. It has the ability to place the baby in 3 different reclining positions. It starts out as a flat pad with raised borders for safety, and then turns into a rocker that also has gentle vibration, and then ends as a seat where baby can grab at the toys.

And because I would never do a review like this without offering you some way to get the same product, Tiny Love has offered to give one lucky winner a 3-n-1 Rocker Napper as well. Good luck ya’ll.

Baby Trend Jogging Stroller Giveaway

And the Winner of the Baby Trend Jogging stroller is…..

CONGRATS Kathy Pease!

My first jogging stroller was a Baby Trend. And I drove it to the ground just like I do my cars. After 6 years of use, direct sunlight, and plenty of abuse, the fabric in the back was tearing and it wasn’t quite the same color it originally was. It had been loved…to death. I needed another one, so when Baby Trend reached out to me to give me another stroller, I felt like saying….”can you read my mind or something?” I was actually already thinking about getting another one.

You have to understand how attached I get to things. My last Baby Trend helped me lose over 100 lbs. It was the stroller that I used to run through the neighborhood with my oldest son when I was a size 22 and push myself to lengths I didn’t think were possible. It was the stroller that allowed me to change my life. I loved it. And I still haven’t parted with it for sentimental reasons…It basically just stands at the side of the house. And now I have a brand new one that looks like this.

Here are some of the features of the stroller:

  • Lockable front swivel wheel for ease of maneuverability
  • All-terrain bicycle tires
  • Convenient parent tray includes two cup holders and covered compartment storage
  • Infant car seat adapter child tray with two cup holders
  • Extra wide, ergonomically shaped foam padded handle
  • Adjustable canopy with covered sunroof ratchets to block sun and wind
  • Effortless trigger fold easily reduces stroller to a compact unit
  • Multi-position, reclining, padded seat
  • Fully adjustable 5-point safety harness and tether strap
  • Footrest reflectors provide greater low-light visibility
  • Extra large storage basket
  • Lightweight steel frame construction
  • JPMA Certified

Would you like one? Baby Trend is giving one lucky winner from Mamavation a jogging stroller as well. Enter below. I’d love to see one of you be my twin! Here are the details.

Pampers has teamed up with Team USA for the London Olympics and has created the cutest diapers for sizes 3-5 to reflect their American pride. You gotta see these…

And not only are they sporting American pride this summer, Pampers is also holding a really cool sweepstakes….

Disney Jr. “Doc McStuffins” Kicks Ass for Girls

I’m not your average kinda girl. I was never into the Disney princesses. It wasn’t till Mulan came out that I FINALLY found a character I could identify with.

Consider the source: I spent 8 years as a softball catcher playing year round on several leagues. In fact, several of the women I played with went to the Olympics that first year they had softball as a competitive sport. Today my favorite thing to do is kickboxing. I love the classes, beating on the bag, getting my frustrations out and sweating. Sparring is also something I love doing. So basically, I’m not afraid to get dirty, play rough, go toe to toe with the boys and give them hell, and then put on a dress afterwards and steal the show.

Okay, “Doc McStuffins” has NOTHING to do with kicking ass like this, BUT I love what “Doc McStuffins” communicates to children. Basically, I see it as saying girls can be very effective in positions of power, like a doctor, i.e. yeah they can kick ass too. And the way “Doc McStuffins” does it is very subtle and natural. (Not crazy or in your face…I really mean calm, subtle and natural.) ALSO, “Doc McStuffins” is really the only health related show that takes the fear out of going to the doctor for children. Every episode is about some issue that your children can identify with and you can discuss it with them afterward. In fact, the creator of the show was inspired by her son’s bout with Ashma and how afraid he was of the doctors office. She wanted to create a show that took the fear out of medicine. The characters in “Doc McStuffins” come to her to cure them of all their ailments and she is a very calm and self assured problem solver. (The opposite of Pablo from Backyardigans who hops around having a panic attack every time something goes wrong….geez that drives me nuts.)

And you can rest assured that “Doc McStuffins” is portraying health information in an accurate way that is relevant to children because of the amount of work that goes into it in the background. I was able to meet with some of the consultants on the show, one of whom works for the Norman Lear Center at the Annenberg School for Communications at USC (my alma mater). Their job is to make sure the public health messages are portrayed accurately in the show. And in addition to having accurate messages, every show is educational and also encourages strong socialization skills. (Something I especially like because I have a son with Aspergers.)

“Doc McStuffins” will be premiering FRIDAY, March 23rd on the popular Disney Junior programming block on Disney Channel at 10am EST and then on the new Disney Junior Channel at 4pm EST. This also marks the premiere date of the new Disney Junior Channel.

I was actually able to get a glimpse of “Doc McStuffins” BEFORE it airs on Friday and let my boys watch it. My husband saw the pink and purple and saw that the main character was a girl and said “you know the boys aren’t going to like this, right?” ….but he was wrong. They were memorized the entire 30 minutes. So I guess you can say two things about that: (1) “Doc McStuffins” is also appealing to “rough and tumble” boys AND (2) “Doc McStuffins” puts children in a trance-like state where they are engrossed in her every word she says. I have NO idea how they do that. So I got to use it several times while I was cooking or doing something I didn’t want the kids into.

Total side note: It’s not everyday you get to meet the cast BEHIND the characters, but I did.

And this is the BEST VIDEO EVAH. I interviewed part of the cast of “Doc McStuffins” and the guy who plays Chilly, the stuffed snowman. His name is Jess Harnell and he’s been the voice behind some other Disney characters you will recognize in productions such as Nemo, Up, Cars, Cars 2, Toy Story, Transformers, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Simpsons, The Fairly Odd Parents, Special Agent Oso, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Chuck, & Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Check out this video of him doing some of his impressions. He almost made me pee my pants.

And yes of course, I wouldn’t make you suffer through this entire post without some swag.

Applebee’s Behind the Menu Recap & Giveaway

This week, Applebee’s launched three new Weight Watchers™ endorsed menu items, and I, along with a handful of other bloggers, had a chance to see how those entrees made it to the menu at Applebee’s Headquarters in Kansas City. What we learned was surprising, at least to me: for example, it takes about a year and a half for a product to make it from an idea on paper to the menu. A year and a half! On top of that, maybe 1% of the ideas the chefs start with make it to the menu.

We also got to chat with the chefs, nutritionists and dietitians who created these new items about how to eat better when dining out, as well as ways to cook delicious meals at home without sacrificing taste for nutrition. A few of my favorite take-aways:

  • Use descriptions to your advantage. If it’s golden and crispy, it’s probably fried and best to be avoided.
  • Salads aren’t always the healthiest choice. Many places douse their salads in sugary, high fat salad dressings that can alter caloric content significantly. Asking for salad dressing on the side instead is a great alternative.
  • If you know the portions are going to be huge, either share your dish or ask for the to-go box with your meal and set half of it aside as soon as it gets to the table.
  • Request that veggies, buns, or other side dishes be prepared sans butter. This is a really easy way to cut out about 100 calories.
  • Keep making requests, and don’t be afraid to be picky! While I can’t speak for other restaurants, I know that Applebee’s tracks menu item modifications and considers them when they refresh their menus.

We learned that the chefs place a high priority on great ingredients, so the U550 menu incorporates lots of real, fresh ingredients like seasonal veggies, and unmodified foods. That means the cheese tastes like cheese because.. well, because it’s cheese instead of reduced-fat or lower calorie cheese. Each dish has a positive focus, which means that they’re putting in more of the “good stuff” like lean proteins and fresh vegetables, without the negatives like empty calories and unnecessary fats. This means that each dish has a lot of texture and more importantly, a lot of great flavor.

Another added bonus, especially for parents, is that Applebee’s has partnered with Kids Live Well to create better menu items for the little ones. Hurray!

But after a whole day of talking about food, we were all excited to finally try the much anticipated new Under 550 Calorie dishes (as well as the four that are already on the menu). We even got to take a tour of the test kitchen and watch the chefs prepare and plate our dishes! That said, the new Weight Watchers™ endorsed entrees are:

Grilled Jalapeno-Lime Shrimp, 8 PointsPlus value per serving
Grilled chipotle-lime shrimp and black bean corn salsa tossed with lime juice and chopped cilantro, served on a mix of zucchini, marinated tomatoes, onions, and red peppers with steamed white rice.
The fresh squeeze of lime juice adds so much dimension to this already flavor-rich entree, and while it packs a little heat, the jalapeno adds a lot to the flavor as well.

Creamy Parmesan Chicken, 12 PointsPlus value per serving
A juicy grilled chicken breast with a creamy au gratin Parmesan sauce, served with steamed spinach and mushroom rice pilaf.
As indulgent as it tastes, it’s hard to believe this dish is less than 550 calories.

Cabernet Mushroom Sirloin, 12 PointsPlus value per serving
A 7-ounce grilled House Sirloin with sautéed Portobello mushrooms and onions in a Napa Valley Cabernet sauce, served with steamed potatoes and garlic broccoli. This steak is a melt-in-your-mouth wonder, and while I’m not a big fan of potatoes, I could not get enough of these tasty little papas.

Now I must give a side note on the pictures: there is always a chef on hand when food is involved, so the pictures of dishes on the menu and in commercials are prepared with the same recipe that a guest will enjoy in-store. I even did a little side-by-side of the Sizzling Chili Lime Chicken for comparison:

And because your mouth is probably watering by now, Applebee’s is offering a giveaway so you can try the new Under 550 Calorie items yourself!

Disney XD- The Magic of Healthy Living “Try It”

As we all know Disney is one of those companies that is so big and so influential, we couldn’t really ignore them if we tried. So when I see the big giants getting involved in trying to make a difference in encouraging our youth get get more active, I smile. Just recently I was given the opportunity to hang out with some of the cast members from shows on Disney XD and learn about their “Magic of Healthy Living” campaign called “Try-It”. Disney Magic of Healthy Living is an initiative designed to partner with parents in their quest to raise healthy, happy kids. The program provides kids and families with engaging content, useful tools and unique experiences to help make healthier lifestyles simple and fun.

I was actually there when they were filming some of these new videos with their cast. This is who I saw:

Alex Christian Jones plays “Eddie” on “Kickin’ It”

Disney Junior’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates Giveaway

Update: The winners have been selected randonly. Congratulations to @kjmaje and @blahblahblah410

Yo Ho Let's Go!

Avast me hearties!!

The awesome people over at the Disney Channel were kind enough to invite us to an exclusive preview of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns” at the Disney Studios in Burbank. We had a wonderful time with world famous Disney hospitality in full effect. The boys loved the show – the new songs were a particular hit (We were singing them in the car on our way home). The kids also got complimentary shirts, swords, & bandanas. Before the show they got to rock out with some of the hosts from Disney Radio and play games. They STILL talk about this and it was over 2 weeks ago.

“Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns,” premiers Monday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m., ET/PT on Disney Channel. To celebrate, DisneyJunior.com has come up with a fun craft idea for kids to create some of their own adventures with Peter, Jake, Izzy, Cubby and Skully at home. Using the templates provided on the “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” Shadow Puppet Theater, kids can color their own puppets and background and put on a puppet show with their favorite Never Land characters.

Also debuting in February is season two of the hit series featuring brand new music videos by The Never Land Pirate Band. Check out a sneak-peek of the new video “Gold Doubloons”  and remember to tune in during the week of February 20 for new episodes of “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” airing daily at 8:30 a.m., ET/PT.

He loved the show!

The kids had such a great time and are now OBSESSED with Peter Pan after seeing the preview. In fact, my oldest has been bragging about it all over the playground, so it looks like an entire Kindergarten class will be tuning in as well.

Love Me Some Shoes Earth Review & Giveaway

(Disclosure: I am employed by Earth Footwear as their “Earth Mom.” I work as their spokesperson, create social media strategies, and assist in implementing those strategies. I’m not sort of person who can be bought though. Most of you know that. My words are my own.)

As part of my agreement with Earth, I am given several pairs of shoes per season to try out and wear. This means I rarely have to go shoe shopping unless I need running shoes. Nice, huh? I don’t ever want for shoes. But every season I run across a pair that I wear so much, my husband asks me if I’m planning on wearing any others. And I say “no, not until they fall off my feet.” There are some boots from last season that I’ve over-worn too.

There is a certain pair in particular this season that I wanted to show you that have made me particularly happy to wear. THE BONSAI. I have them in black, but I’m showing you the picture in blue so you can see clearly what they look like. Because I’m pregnant, what I most cherish in shoes is comfort. The Bonsai are not only adorable, but they are comfortable. So much so that I can wear them all day even with the imbalance of my body and new center of gravity. I have a feeling these will be worn so much my husband will ask me if I’m wearing others.

The Bonsai are part of a new line created by Earth. Earth now have three lines: Kalso Earth Shoes, Earthies, and Earth. All shoes are available for purchase at PlanetShoes. Earth Footwear, as shown with the Bonsai, are a more affordable shoe with no negative heel, but they are still earth-friendly as the entire line is. PlanetShoes.com, a sister company to Earth, is offering Mamavation readers two additional pairs of the Bonsai. Wouldn’t they be cute in your wardrobe? Just think of what they would go with. As always, the Earth line is about comfort, style, and earth-friendly design.
