Mamavation Monday: Knocked-Up Workouts are Beyond

Have you joined Mamavation recently, because you need to lose weight, but still haven’t made any significant progress? Are you lacking motivation in the nutrition or fitness department? I battle my inner couch potato, sweet tooth, and mindless eater every day. Can you relate to that? Here is a great way to ease into the world of workouts without serious sweat commitment. Pregnancy workouts are not just for pregnant women! They are also great for beginners and will help you to get ready for more challenging levels of activities.

However, if you are pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, you probably want to have a healthy fit pregnancy. With so many Mamavation sistas being pregnant right now, it sure makes me think about a baby #3. My first two pregnancies were not very active… I have heard that a woman can remain being physically active throughout the pregnancy, and I know some people that did just that. We all followed Stephanie(aka @fitmomtraining) (awesome sista in our community) through her pregnancy – she just recently had a baby #2 and continued to workout throughout out her whole pregnancy.

And how about our own Leah? She continued rocking workout classes for the longest time. These ladies and so many more have done amazing job keeping themselves active. If I ever decide to commit to another baby, I want to know how to go through the pregnancy fit and well.

Special Guest: Erica (@KnockedUpFit)

Beef and Veggie Ginger Stir Fry

One of my biggest struggles is getting my husband to eat veggies. For him, veggies is the lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on his burger. His biggest complaint is that veggies are bland and don’t have much flavor. While I disagree with him, I have had great success with getting him to eat his veggies in this very flavorful Beef and veggie ginger stirfry that I serve over a bed of organic brown rice:

Beef and Veggie Ginger Stir Fry

Rating: 51

Beef and Veggie Ginger Stir Fry

Ingredients

  • For the beef:
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3/4 pound boneless sirloin, cut across the grain into 1/4-inch-thick slices

  • For the sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable broth

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced gingerroot
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 3 cups mixed veggies (I used a frozen Thai Stir Fry Mix)
  • cooked organic brown rice as an accompaniment

    20120323-070757.jpg

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef:
In a small bowl toss beef in the corn starch.
  2. Make the sauce:
In a small bowl dissolve the cornstarch and sugar in the soy sauce, red wine vinegar, and the broth.
  3. Stir fry all of the ingredients:
Heat a wok or large heavy skillet over high heat until it is hot, add 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, and heat it until it just begins to smoke. Stir-fry the beef in the oil in batches for 1 minute, or until it is no longer pink, and transfer it as it is cooked with a slotted spoon to a plate.
    20120323-070813.jpg

Add the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to the wok, heat it until it is hot but not smoking, and in the oil stir-fry the gingerroot, the garlic, for approximately 30seconds. Add the vegetables and stir-fry the mixture until the vegetables soften. Stir the sauce, then add it to the wok with the beef and any juices that have accumulated on the plate, and stir the mixture continuously until the sauce is thickened and the beef is heated through. Transfer the mixture to a heated platter and serve it with the brown rice.

Disney Jr. “Doc McStuffins” Kicks Ass for Girls

I’m not your average kinda girl. I was never into the Disney princesses. It wasn’t till Mulan came out that I FINALLY found a character I could identify with.

Consider the source: I spent 8 years as a softball catcher playing year round on several leagues. In fact, several of the women I played with went to the Olympics that first year they had softball as a competitive sport. Today my favorite thing to do is kickboxing. I love the classes, beating on the bag, getting my frustrations out and sweating. Sparring is also something I love doing. So basically, I’m not afraid to get dirty, play rough, go toe to toe with the boys and give them hell, and then put on a dress afterwards and steal the show.

Okay, “Doc McStuffins” has NOTHING to do with kicking ass like this, BUT I love what “Doc McStuffins” communicates to children. Basically, I see it as saying girls can be very effective in positions of power, like a doctor, i.e. yeah they can kick ass too. And the way “Doc McStuffins” does it is very subtle and natural. (Not crazy or in your face…I really mean calm, subtle and natural.) ALSO, “Doc McStuffins” is really the only health related show that takes the fear out of going to the doctor for children. Every episode is about some issue that your children can identify with and you can discuss it with them afterward. In fact, the creator of the show was inspired by her son’s bout with Ashma and how afraid he was of the doctors office. She wanted to create a show that took the fear out of medicine. The characters in “Doc McStuffins” come to her to cure them of all their ailments and she is a very calm and self assured problem solver. (The opposite of Pablo from Backyardigans who hops around having a panic attack every time something goes wrong….geez that drives me nuts.)

And you can rest assured that “Doc McStuffins” is portraying health information in an accurate way that is relevant to children because of the amount of work that goes into it in the background. I was able to meet with some of the consultants on the show, one of whom works for the Norman Lear Center at the Annenberg School for Communications at USC (my alma mater). Their job is to make sure the public health messages are portrayed accurately in the show. And in addition to having accurate messages, every show is educational and also encourages strong socialization skills. (Something I especially like because I have a son with Aspergers.)

“Doc McStuffins” will be premiering FRIDAY, March 23rd on the popular Disney Junior programming block on Disney Channel at 10am EST and then on the new Disney Junior Channel at 4pm EST. This also marks the premiere date of the new Disney Junior Channel.

I was actually able to get a glimpse of “Doc McStuffins” BEFORE it airs on Friday and let my boys watch it. My husband saw the pink and purple and saw that the main character was a girl and said “you know the boys aren’t going to like this, right?” ….but he was wrong. They were memorized the entire 30 minutes. So I guess you can say two things about that: (1) “Doc McStuffins” is also appealing to “rough and tumble” boys AND (2) “Doc McStuffins” puts children in a trance-like state where they are engrossed in her every word she says. I have NO idea how they do that. So I got to use it several times while I was cooking or doing something I didn’t want the kids into.

Total side note: It’s not everyday you get to meet the cast BEHIND the characters, but I did.

And this is the BEST VIDEO EVAH. I interviewed part of the cast of “Doc McStuffins” and the guy who plays Chilly, the stuffed snowman. His name is Jess Harnell and he’s been the voice behind some other Disney characters you will recognize in productions such as Nemo, Up, Cars, Cars 2, Toy Story, Transformers, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Simpsons, The Fairly Odd Parents, Special Agent Oso, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Chuck, & Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Check out this video of him doing some of his impressions. He almost made me pee my pants.

And yes of course, I wouldn’t make you suffer through this entire post without some swag.

Giveaway:

5 Doc McStuffin VIB (Very Important Blogger) Packages including: Doc McStuffins lunch tin, sticker sheet, poster, band-aids, & notebook (The Book of Boo Boos)

Mamavation Monday: Welcome to New Graduates

Mamavation Mom Campaign is coming to a close. Can you believe that we have gone through 11 bootcamps already? Mamavation Moms have learned a lot of new things, but they do have one single fitness advice to share for us:

LauraMy one piece of advice for the Sisterhood is to never give up. Everyone has a bad day. Get over and move on. I think of every day as a fresh start. Yesterday cannot be changed. The future is uncertain. The only day we can control is TODAY. I try to not let my mistakes and attitudes of the previous day carry through to the next day. Dwelling on the past is not helpful.

LoloYou are strong! You can do this!  You will do this!  Yes it is going to be hard work.  Yes it is going to take time.  Yes there are going to be ups and downs. But, yes you will and can do this!

Andrea: Just Do It!  That is my advice.  There are definitely days when I don’t want to work out….like really don’t want to work out.  But I think “just do it and get it over with” and by the time I am done, I am energized and I feel good.  And I always think it is worth it.  Exercise is hard, especially if you are just starting out, but do something, anything, everyday!  Pretty soon you will want to exercise.

This Monday on Mamavation TV our new Mamavation Graduates will share their best tips on making it through the Mamavation Moms bootcamp

Special Guest: Andrea Kruse (@notimemom)
From the garden, through the kitchen and to the table – it is all an adventure for this busy mom of 2! Andrea loves cooking, baking and you most likely have seen her recipes on Mamavation. This last one – Tahini Tuna Salad makes me so hungry. However, Andrea is also a graduate of Mamavation Mom  bootcamp. She is great at encouraging others to stay on track and on Monday she will tell us how to make weight loss victories less a lifetime.

BLOGGING CARNIVAL: This week’s blogging carnival is sponsored by Mamavation.

One blogging carnival participant will receive $25 VISA gift card. To be eligible answer the following blogging carnival question in your weekly Mamavation blog post and link back to Mamavation site.

How do you keep yourself active, when you really don’t feel like working out ?

Tahini Tuna Salad

I will admit it. I know how healthy tuna is for me but I get bored with it. Tuna Salad isn’t very exciting.

Then I heard about a Lebanese style Tahini Tuna recipe. It lets me enjoy those omega-3 fatty acids without the mayonnaise or pickle juice. Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds and olive oil. It is found in hummus and used in other Middle Eastern dishes. The taste is distinct and this recipe has become my new go-to tuna dish. Enjoy it on crackers, bread, lettuce wraps or with chopped veggies. Enjoy all the benefits a classic with a Middle Eastern twist!

Tahini Tuna Salad

Make sure to mix your jar of Tahini well to incorporate the oil before measuring. You can find Tahini with other spreads like natural peanut butter in the health food section. One can will last you for a long time and many delicious recipes.

Bitter Sweet: My Top Five Lessons I’ve Learned from Being a Mamavation Mom

REVISED copy

5. Stress can do funky things. Even if you are doing everything perfect with nutrition and exercise, stress can really affect how your body responds to it all. Figure out some ways to take care of your mental health, first and foremost.

4. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Do what you can. Forget the rest. Sometimes you cannot get it all done and sometimes you just have to deal with it. As someone that likes to plan and likes to determine my own fate, it has been difficult to let go of control and roll with the punches. It has become easier though. I am learning.

3. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Forget about yesterday. You can’t change yesterday and tomorrow will take care of itself. Live in the moment and make the most of each one. When you make a mistake, move on. You cannot change it. Tomorrow is a new day. Don’t get stuck in the mistakes of today.

2. I feel so much better eating right and exercising. Everything is better when I take better care of myself. Sleep is one of the most overlooked priorities. I learned that getting enough sleep has to move up in my priority list. I have to take care of my WHOLE SELF.

1. Life is about balance. For every minute spent on one thing takes away from something else. Time is precious and limited. I will forever look at my time differently. I have to think carefully about what I spend my time on. Even exercise is something that takes away from spending time on something else—like spending time with my family. Time must not be squandered and must be balanced.

17.5 inches GONE! 6.4 pounds—GONE!

Thank you EVERYONE that has supported me on this journey! I would like to thank Alysa from InspiredRD and Pete Cohen from Weight Loss Guru, the Sistahood, Leah, Mark, Megan and Meagan. Thank you to my fellow Mamavation Moms Lolo and Andrea! You two have made this journey so special! I cannot wait to meet up with you both in person someday soon! XOXO

Top 3 Things That I Have Learned from Being a Mamavation Mom

Here are the top 3 things that I have learned from being a Mamavation Mom.

1.  It is about progress not perfection!

If I made a mistake in the past, the old me would get so frustrated and give up. I would say, “I’ll just start again next week.”  Next week would turn into weeks or  even months.  No one is perfect, it is okay to make mistakes.  The important thing to do is pick yourself back up and continue on your journey.  Do not let that one cupcake or brownie win.

2.  Breathe!

Sometimes it is as simple as that.  For me running is tough, really tough.  Learning how to breathe while I run has really helped build my confidence and give me more success.   I am also working on intervals by jogging then walking, jogging then walking, etc.   It is about learning what is best for you to help you succeed, and always remember to breathe.

3.  You are Stronger Than You Think!

I AM STRONG! I CAN DO THIS!  I WILL DO THIS!  Yes it is going to be hard work.  Yes it is going to take time.  Yes there are going to be ups and downs. But, yes I will and can do this!  You can too!

So far as a Mamavation mom I have lost 10.6 lbs and 14 inches!!

Thank you for following along my Mamavation journey.  Your love and support has meant so much to me. Thank you also to Alysa from InspiredRD and Pete Cohen from Weight Loss Guru,  the Sistahood, Leah, Mark, Shelley and Andrea.  And a special thank you to my fellow Mamavation Moms Laura and Andrea!  You are both rocking it!

I look forward to continuing my journey and mentoring a future Mamavation Mom!!

Until next time!

Lolo from Crazy About My Baybah

All Good Things Come To An End

Hey everyone!

So this week was not the best weight loss week I have had.  I can blame it on multiple things but it all really comes down to not being dedicated enough this week.  I’ve been worried about some other things and well, it showed on the scale.

And here is what it said:

All in all – I am down a total of 8.8 lbs. When you look at the big picture, that isn’t bad.  It’s slow and steady and that is how I will win this race.  I don’t plan or want huge results each week because I know that doesn’t stay off.  1-2 lbs/week is good and it’s healthy.  That is what I want.

My final measurements:

Measurements

1/9/12

3/12/12

Total Lost

Waist 44 41.5 2.5
Hips 52.5 48 4.5
Bust 46 42.5 3.5
Arm – rt 16 14.5 1.5
Arm – lf 15.5 14.5 1.0
Thigh – rt 26 24 2.0
Thigh – lf 27.5 24 3.5

AND – pics!

-18.5 inches!!  WOW!

This will be my last official Mamavation Mom blog.  Can you believe it?  Here is what I have learned:

  • Not all calories are the same.  100 calories of a fruit or veggie is not the same as 100 calories of candy.
  • Exercise is important to lose the inches.  Eating right is how you lose weight.  Both together is how you become healthy.
  • Getting enough water in a day is super important and helps with your weight loss.
  • You have to eat breakfast!!
  • It’s harder than you think to get 10,000 steps in a day!  You have to work for it.
  • My scale doesn’t define my weight loss journey.

It’s been a crazy journey!  I met and bonded with two amazing women – Laura and Lolo.  I’ve learned a bit about myself and I have tools in place for me to continue on this journey of mine.

I have absolute faith in myself and I know that just because my losses will no longer be public, it doesn’t mean they need to stop.   While I am thankful for this opportunity, I am super excited to get back to a “normal” life and finding my way through it with all of my new tools.

Thank you all for following my journey and for all of the encouragement along the way.  It has meant the world to me!  Also thank you to Alysa from Inspired RD and Pete Cohen from Weight Loss Guru.  Thank you to the Sistahood, Leah, Shannon and Kelly.  And thank you especially to my fellow Moms – Laura and Lolo.

This isn’t the last you’ll see of me.  Next up is being a Mentor to the next set of Mamavation Moms.  Are you going to be one??  I can’t wait to see who applies!

Until I see you again…..
