Mamavation Mondays: Natural Rhythms

You have most likely noticed that when you deviate from healthy habits you perform less optimally in all areas of your life.  If you have strayed from your healthy lifestyle for a longer period of time then I hope you have been gathering glances of what it is like to feel awesome again with your wellness efforts.  Health is a huge key to living optimally.

This week’s guest will talk to us about returning to our natural born center that we deviate from as we go through life with stresses and strains.  She examines posture and breathing to strengthen our insides as a way to return to our body’s natural rhythms outside.  The foundation for her POISE technique begins with toning the pelvic floor – an area all mothers who give birth are affected by.

Special Guest: Dr. Teri Jory

Dr. Teri Jory is a 4th degree black belt, professional ice skater, dancer, choreographer, wife, and mother of twins. The POISE technique was born when Jory began experimenting with different body positions and movements, combining martial arts, body sculpting, and Pilates so she could get back in shape after the birth of her twins. Dr. Jory has been applauded for her work with breast cancer survivors as she helps them to gain a better quality of life during, and in the aftermath of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. She is the creator of the award winning DVD, POISE CORE TRAINING.  A portion of the sales of both POISE DVDs are given to Breast Cancer foundations.

Mamavation Mondays: Even Mothers Need Mothering

When it comes to working out while pregnant and after baby when that post-baby belly mush is driving you nuts, I believe we need to be kinder to ourselves. Yes, workout and sweat and be strong, but also be realistic and know that during pregnancy your body is changing every day. After baby, remember it took your body 9 months to change and it will take some time to get back in shape. This is true for moms with kids of all ages too. Life is busy with kids and maybe you have been putting yourself and your health last. So when you take the time to get back in shape the key is to be happy with your starting point and just enjoy your time for you and exercise. Be kind and be patient!

Being patient sometimes means backing off. Being patient means knowing when to modify workout poses so that your form and your quality are correct. Being patient means knowing it is not all about maximum weight and endless repetitions and fast speeds. Being patient means feeling good, minimizing injuring, and maximizing stability. Especially nursing mothers with Relaxing hormone in abundance and, therefore more ligament laxity in their joints, need to work with more control and less push. However, I see all the time, women working out without or even with trainers and there form is sloppy or they are watching TV. IF you are taking the time to exercise the key is to do it correctly with optimal form, alignment and attention so that you not only prevent injury but so that you actually gain better strength all over.

Mamavation Mondays: Transformation

During the course of the Mamavation campaigns we see the mothers go through an amazing physical transformation as they learn new lifestyle habits that hopefully also lead to a beautiful emotional and mental transformations too.  Changing one’s self takes a good deal of work.  Ask anyone who has transformed for the better and they will tell you that the work was worth it.

This week’s show is about transformation and you can translate that into how it applies to your goals (physique, career, half-marathon, etc.).  A big focus of the Mamavation campaign is weight loss and our guest this week went through a remarkable “Fat to Fit” transformation on his own.  I have known him through twitter as an extremely approachable person who is quick to share his success and story with others.  Arrive to the show with questions and be prepared to giggle.  I also know him through twitter to be quite a fun scamp.

Special Guest: Stefan Pinto (@stefanpinto)

Stefan Pinto completely transformed himself from an out-of-shape, overweight office worker to an in-demand model and actor — through health discoveries all his own. His first book, “Fat-to-Fit: 50 Easy Ways to Lose Weight” is now available for the iPhone and iPad. His website is: http://www.pintofactory.com

Mamavation Mondays: Our Other Halves

We talk a great deal about accountability in Mamavation with how we use social media to make ourselves better in the Sistahood.  However there are people that we strive to improve ourselves for that matter a great deal more than our friends behind favorite blogs, Facebook pages, and Twitter accounts.  We have our families.

Above all we are accountable to ourselves, our partners, and our children.

This week is dedicated to our partners in crime with our beautiful families.  Find out how moms are changing their families.  What works for one family does not always work for another.   In the ways we strive to improve ourselves, thus our families, this is a show to uplift our community as a whole.

Special Guests: The Men Behind the Mamavation Women

Please attend the broadcast at least 15 minutes early to make sure your feed and equipment are working to be on the show.  A good deal of Mamavation Men watch children during the show while moms participate for the hour – this week may be the week with the kiddos running wild behind the scenes as we invite partners to get in on the act.

Mamavation Mondays: Ya Can’t Out Train Bad Nutrition

I hope you have heard the phrase “ya can’t out train bad nutrition” before.  The nutrition aspect of a healthy living journey can account for a high percentage of what you are doing (up to 80% of your weight loss effort).  However this effort does not have to complicated as you are adjusting your lifestyle.  Our guest this week is a great resource to our campaign on what to eat and how to eat it well.  Do check out her website for great recipes.

Special Guest: Alysa Bajenaru, RD (@InspiredRD)

Alysa Bajenaru, RD earned her Nutritional Sciences Degree from the University of Oklahoma.  After working as a clinical dietitian she transitioned to focus more on the wellness aspect of nutrition and fitness.  She earned a personal training certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and later a group fitness certification through the American Council on Exercise.  Alysa joined us in the sixth Mamavation campaign and we are thrilled to have her return with her guidance and out-of-the-box approach to make balanced nutrition an inspiring experience.  You can see her beautiful recipes and take on a balanced lifestyle at Inspired RD.

Mamavation Mondays: PARTY!

Monday night. Twitter Party. Be There. No seriously, there are a grip of giveaways and we get to learn who the two new campaign moms are.

I will be toasting the night away with bubbly – sparking water that is.  I hope you are all staying hydrated as the weather is changing where you live.  And since we do not currently have a Water Czar… DRINK while you are reading this post.

There will be no Blogging Carnival prize this week but you can link up your posts here.

See everyone next week when we will be back to our normal weekly show with guests, giveaways, and prizes for the blogging carnival.

Mamavation Mondays: The Finalists

This is a fun week of fine-tuning, planning, and gearing up for the next campaign.  I urge everyone to act as if they are in the campaign to support the moms as well as maintain or jump start your fitness plans.  Some fun things to look into are:

  • Eating local and in-season.  Beyond your own garden planning check Local Harvest for farmer markets, CSAs, and locavore-friendly restaurants.
  • Getting outside and training for a race or just to move in the fresh air.  Look at Fit Studio for their training plans.

If you have areas you want to improve or jump start and don’t know your first step make sure to speak up.  Within the Sistahood we have a wealth of talents and information.  You may even be able to find an accountability partner in your journey.

For this week also be sure to check out the Hartman House we Heart Japan Disaster Relief.

Mamavation Husband Interview with @ninemoremonths

I wanted to post something that might be helpful to all of the applications for Mamavation Campaign 8. I could give lots of advice and feedback, but I wanted to do something a little different. If you’ve applied, or are thinking of applying, grab your husband and share this little bit of advice that I managed to talk my husband into giving us.

When you first found out that I was going to be a Mamavation Mom, what did that mean to you? It didn’t mean anything to me, because at that point I didn’t really know what Mamavation was about. I thought it was just a group of bloggers trying to lose weight, and I hadn’t quite fully grasped the support side of it yet. When I found out more about it I was happy for you, knowing that getting healthy was something you have wanted to achieve for a long time, but struggled with. I could see that you were excited about and I wanted to see you have success.

You knew that I would have to make a lot of changes during the program. Did you think those changes would affect you that much? I knew that things would be different, but it became more challenging for me than I anticipated. During the program you were more preoccupied with your goals and activities and schedule that you had to keep on a daily basis. After working all day I had to come home and pick up some of the slack so that you could have time to complete everything. I think adding kids to an equation like this makes it a lot harder to fit everything in, but being committed to a relationship, sometimes you have to change your game plan too. Your wife will have her schedule, and that means you (the husband) will have things you need to do too to help her.

Once you saw me start changing for the better, did it have any effects on you at all? I was happy to see the changes, and I definitely wanted to try to make changes for myself as well. The biggest problem with that was that it’s hard for me to find the time and motivation for myself as well when I’m trying to help my wife succeed. I would like to start making some time for myself as well, but during the campaign everything kind of revolves around the mom, which is not a bad thing, but just different than what is normal for us.

What advice would you give to the husbands of the next round of campaign moms? Don’t be discouraged. It will be tough at points, knowing that there’s going to be a lot more asked of you. You may feel like you’re putting a lot more effort in, but you have nothing to show for it yourself. But, moving through the program, you’ll see positive changes in your wife, physically and mentally, which will be beneficial for you and your children. Mamavation isn’t just about making hot moms, it’s unique because it has the family aspect to it, and because of that, every member of the family plays a role. In order for your wife to be successful, you have to be a part of it.

Thank you to my husband for sharing his thoughts with us. Yes, the campaign was frustrating for him and he felt like he didn’t get a lot of time to his self. It puts a lot of strain on a relationship, but it’s short, and once it’s over you will both be thankful that you stuck through it.

Good luck to all of the applicants, you have all already made amazing changes in your lives!

Mamavation Mondays: Mamavators Unite

Spring has sprung! I hope you are all awakening your bodies, gardens, and optimism as the world is setting out better weather and more daylight for us to play in.

This week’s show is one of my favorites.  It is all about motivation and us motivating each other – the core of Mamavation.  The show will be dedicated to anyone who has applied to become Mamavation Mom to get on camera and address the rest of the Sistahood.  This week’s show will also have the announcement of who will win the treadmill from the Hayneedle Blogging Carnival!

If you have applied be prepared to be camera ready for the show.  Register for your Stickam account and show up early to make sure your stream is working well.  This will become a weekly requirement if you are selected as a Mamavation Campaign Mom so it is a good idea to get used to it.

Don’t forget to come out and play with Fit Studio Twitter Party this Wednesday 8-10 PM EST.

Mamavation Mondays: Take Advantage of Change

Congratulations to our Campaign Mothers and the participants of the Move It or Lose It Challenge.  Big numbers were posted all around, but most of all we hope that lifestyle changes were implemented that will benefit participants and their families.

This week is an interesting time of change for many of us.  Daylight savings time is springing us forward to lose an hour of sleep, but gain an extra hour of sunlight as we finish our days.  In another week Spring will be here and with it a change to more favorable weather.  Are you planning to take advantage of light and better weather for your workouts?  Are you planning a garden or what to make with the fresh harvests from farmers markets?  If you aren’t then start making your game plan now.

Perhaps a plan for this time change and workout motivation can be a boot camp workout.  I hope everyone was inspired by Bookieboo with the #armystrong campaign last week.  This week’s show will include her recap of that experience as well as a special guest.

Special Guest: Daniel Alarik (@gruntstyle)

Daniel Alarik is a former US Army Infantry Drill Sergeant.  He will talk to us about physical training in Army boot camp.  His company is Grunt Style,  a company of US Veterans and family members of veterans of the US Military. They create fashionable patriotic wear for every American Patriot.
