Gonna Wash Those Chemicals Right Out of My Hair!

You can thank me later now that this tune is stuck in your head! 😉

I’ve been working on getting our personal care items toxic free for a while. I knew sulfates weren’t good, but I had NO clue about all of the other junk in our poos, conditioners, soaps, body washes, etc. What an ENLIGHTENING week!

Kim, from Episencial taught us SO much this week about our skin. Did you know that 60% of what is put on your skin is absorbed in 30 seconds?? (Think pain patches, birth control, nicotine patches, etc) Bet you never considered that the chemicals in  your shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, make-up, etc are full of toxic chemicals and they are EASILY absorbed into your body.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, think about anything that touches it and where it comes from. Now, I know we can’t live in a perfect world with perfect organic cotton clothing, etc. But we CAN control some things that comes in contact with it. This is especially true for children and babies. Did you know that baby’s skin isn’t fully developed at birth?? Did you know that it takes several years for your baby’s skin to reach a more mature thickness? Newborn’s skin is 5 times thinner than adults! You want to be very discriminatory about what you put on your newborn’s skin!!

There are 7 major things to avoid in your personal care:

  1. Fragrance
  2. Petroleum Byproducts (mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin wax, etc)
  3. Parabens
  4. Phenoxyethenol
  5. Propylene Glycol
  6. Proteins/Gluten
  7. Aluminum (Deoderant Specific){I know you are all running to look at your shampoo bottles now! LOL}

Fragrance is what I am going to look for first. Did you know that fragrance can have more than 4000 ingredients/chemicals in it?! WHO sits around and comes up with this junk? And why is it “safe” for us? This frustrates me to no end. But I have had an awesome opportunity to try some incredible “safe” personal care products! I’m excited to have tried Walgreen’s line of natural products called “Ology“.

Personal Care Week 4

I LOVE the shampoos and conditioners…and the cleaning products are great too! Episencial’s line of baby products looks amazing! I can NOT wait to try it! Nine Naturals is another line of safe products specifically for pregnancy and beyond. They smell AWESOME with out all of the crap in them!

One of the tricks you can use when shopping for junk free personal care products is to look for the symbols below. Also avoiding fragrance and petroleum products, in general, should remedy many of the main stream brands.

Weight Loss

Scale Pic Week Four

So this week I lost 4 more pounds, bringing my total loss to 8lbs! I am SUPER excited to have crossed my first goal of 5 lbs of fat GONE. I am also down 7.5 inches from when I applied. EXCITING and an awesome motivator!

I am finding it more and more easy to make wise choices when under stress, but I had a SUPER stressful week this week and forgot to eat THREE meals. I hope I didn’t sabotage my efforts and wind up gaining a few because of it. Still a hard battle to fight, but I find I am advancing on the enemy a bit. 😉

Week 4 Weight and Measurements

Until next week,

Lori 🙂

I wrote an article about how bad petroleum is a few month’s back on a client’s request…about it being linked to breast cancer! Scary stuff, clean products are the only way to go. And great job!
