“Best” Ranked Makeup Brands via PFAS Testing

These brands did not have detectable fluorine at 10 parts per million in the products that were tested. This does not mean that they don’t have any PFAS, but it means that it was not detectable at 10 parts per million, which is the standardized test we used for this investigation. In the future, we hope to test down to lower levels as those tests & methods become more affordable.

Lip Balms Tested for Indications of PFAS "Forever Chemicals" -- Guide

“Best” Lip Balms

These are our recommended best natural lip balms. Our laboratory did not find indications of PFAS “forever chemicals” inside their formula via total organic fluorine (TOF) testing with a detection limit of 10 ppm. They also do not have any disclosed ingredients that were concerning to our team. These products contain mostly natural ingredients, with some USDA Organic ingredients. We cannot tell if they are cruelty-free, but we can say they do not contain known endocrine disruptors, which would make them our favorite lip balms.

Sunscreen Chemicals Harm Children & Coral Reefs, Except For These Brands

“Best” Ranked Sunscreen Products

These are all mineral sunscreens containing either nano-free titanium dioxide or nano-free zinc oxide. These brands do not contain UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, & octocrylene. They also do not contain harsh preservatives, nanoparticles, formaldehyde releasers, parabens or undisclosed fragrances. An asterisk * means this brand has sent me laboratory results to prove they do not have heavy metal contamination and are well within California Prop.65 recommendations. “Best” Ranked 10-Free Nail Polishes and Top Coats

10-Free is probably the number that’s hardest to quite pinpoint. Some places say it’s without animal products (so it’s vegan), others say that 10-free has no gluten. Still, others claim that 10-free means no fragrances. And others claim that the ingredient is tert-butyl hydroperoxide. Others claim it means no hydroquinone monomethyl ether or methylisothiazolinone.

“Best” Ranked Face Washes and Moisturizers

These brands represent the safest brands on the block. One thing to note is Mamavation allows some light preservatives to protect the formulation from molds like phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate or citric acid. It’s not fun to find mold in products that you forgot to use up, so if you decide to select a brand without preservatives make sure to use it within 4-6 months after you open.

Mamavation used an EPA-certified lab to do this testing. No fluorine was detected in any of these products sent to the lab in 2020 and 2021. The Level of Qualification (LOQ) for testing was 10 parts per million, therefore if products had fluorine at lower levels, the test would not find it. Toxic Deodorant Chemicals--What Brands to Avoid & Best Brands Available 3

“Best” Ranked Deodorants

These contain mostly simple ingredients, antibacterials like coconut oil, baking soda, and/or and salts to control odor, essential oils, and more. These products use 100% fragrance transparency and do not rely heavily on preservatives. Lots of brands have shifted around since our last update and some may have products in different categories. Note: may need to do an armpit cleanse if they do not work on you.

“Best” Ranked Dry Shampoos

These brands were the safest by far! They did not contain any form of butane or undisclosed fragrances. They contain the ingredients we approved above for both light and dark hair.

Shampoos Without DMDM Hydantoin & Other Formaldehyde Releasing Preservatives 2021

“Best” Ranked Shampoos & Conditioners

These sulfate-free shampoo brands also do not contain added phthalates or parabens. They may contain preservatives, but not ones I’m concerned about. If you are looking for shampoo free of chemicals, you should feel comfortable using just about any of the products on this list. Most rely on natural ingredients like essential oils, coconut oil, argan oil, tea tree oil, shea butter, aloe vera, to provide cleansing and moisture to various hair types. In addition to being free of harsh chemicals, most of these brands are also cruelty-free and/or eco-friendly and most are made from organic ingredients. We also looked specifically for fragrance-free brands that were marked with a (*) and natural, curly, or coiled friendly brands marked with (**) to help you find them.

This category represents the best products with the best ingredients. We allowed products with fluoride in this category provided they didn’t have other excessive junk ingredients called out in this post. However, fluoride products are clearly labeled in bold with a *. We’ve also identified the toothpaste and tooth powders that self-identify as “gluten-free.”

“Best” Ranked Mouthwashes

These mouthwashes contain none of the ingredients that were warned about in this report. We can gladly recommend any of these brands to your family.

“Best” Ranked Toilet Paper 

These products are made from either a mixture of sugarcane and bamboo together or simply unbleached bamboo. Unfortunately, there isn’t really a clean bamboo bleaching process that doesn’t have at least a little bit of chlorine derivatives. But these bleaching processes are light years ahead of elemental chlorine bleaching, which is way more toxic. We recognize this so are deciding to put the sugarcane/bamboo blends as “best” because they would contain less contamination by adding the sugarcane. Sugarcane is much cleaner as well. If you want to go 100% chlorine free, select unbleached. However, it’s unlikely to be soft and it’s rare.

Head Lice *shudders* 4

“Best” Ranked Head Lice Treatment Brands

These brands contain non-pesticidal lice treatments that are becoming the first choice among parents. These treatments, like the rest, should be used along with a nit-comb to comb out the eggs after killing the adult lice. These include Dimethicone, Isopropyl myristate, & Cyclomethicone.

As always, make certain to follow the directions as stated on the packaging.

After evaluating close to 200 anti-acne products, this list represents the “cleanest” brands in terms of inactive ingredients. If your acne is more severe, you may need to focus more on the “better” category instead.

This list contains beard oil products that do not have ingredients linked with hormone disruption, are linked to lesser beard hair growth because they inhibit DHT, are problematic to children or pets, or will cause any photosensitivity. Each brand in this list is also 100% transparent with ingredients as far as we can tell. If you do not have a problem with allergies or beard fullness, have children under six years old, or have a pet (dog or cat), this list or the better list would be fine for you.

    Hello Leah, I was going to purchase Prevana hair color, but after looking at this list of ingredients it seems like there are more than 1 bad ingredients. Have they possibly changed their formula possibly since this was last tested? Current ingredients listed in Amazon: Water, cetearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, peg-4 rapeseedamide, ammonium hydroxide, ceteareth-25, mineral oil, paraffinum liquidum, toluene-2,5 diamine sulfate, fragrance, sodium sulfate, polyquaternium-22, acetic acid, lanolin alcohol, propylparaben, hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydorlyzed silk.
