Have you seen Target’s “Clean Beauty” Aisle? It’s that part of Target which claims to be non-toxic, safer and green. But is Target following a similar standard of “clean beauty” as Mamavation? Well, not really. Target’s Claims About Their “Clean Beauty” Standards Are Vague and Mistaken

We love that Target has decided to support “clean beauty” standards, but we are struggling to figure out what these standards are. Furthermore, we have found some clear examples where they have ignored their own standards whereas there are products with prohibited ingredients inside. Odd, right? We thought so too.

If you go to the Target “clean beauty” page you see this quote explaining some of their standards:

“Look for the Target Clean symbol on beauty products to find those without phthalates, Propylparaben & butylparaben, sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) & other ingredients you may not want.”

The odd thing about this statement from Target was we actually found some of their prohibited ingredients inside some of the products searchable in the “clean” aisle. Specifically, you’ll find prohibited “sodium laureth sulfate” (SLES) inside these products here:

The vast majority of the “clean beauty” products selected by Target to represent “clean beauty” did not practice 100% ingredient disclosure either. Most brands are not disclosing specific fragrances, which can be very problematic to people wanting to avoid phthalates in fragrance or allergens in fragrance.

This disclosure in general doesnt’ have any teeth to it, so it leaves us wondering what their standards actually are. So Mamavation got to looking closer at what they were accepting as “clean beauty” standards.

We took a look at most of the ingredients in their personal care products. We were not able to do the entire aisle because it has over 4,000+ products. (So give us a break.) But we did do several sections of the store and are leaving you with our own investigations on brands in case you want more variety of “best” brands available.

Target Ranks Among the “Safest” Retailers In Terms of Chemicals, But Are They Doing Enough in the Personal Care Aisle?

When it comes to Target’s Mind the Store Report Card Rating they get an A+ based on other retailers. But that is more of a vanity score because they actually received 105 out of 164 points. I’m not a mathematician, but that’s actually a 64% grade, which is a solid D.

No one ever brags about getting a D, but hey!

Why would they receive an A rating? Well, because retailers are very behind in protecting us from hormone-disrupting chemicals on the shelves, so the depressing part is a solid D actually gets them an A in comparison to other retailers. It’s called “grading on a curve” and you may have had some tough college classes graded in a similar fashion.

Don’t worry, every year the grading scenarios get harder and harder so they are continually forcing the companies to get better.

But Target also has received the 2nd highest score in 2021 making them one of the “cleanest” retail brands on the market.

So what has Target done right? This is from their report card:

Target has a written safer chemicals policy and list of restricted chemicals and was the second major U.S. retailer to announce a safer chemicals policy in 2013.
The policy applies to the company’s “entire value chain, operations and every product” it sells, including both private-label and brand-name products. They have focused on the following: household cleaning, textiles, beauty, baby care, personal care, and household cleaning products.
The company has made grants to organizations engaged in green chemistry research and safer alternatives. (Good people too!)
In 2020, Target announced it was eliminating bisphenols in thermal receipt paper, a significant step to address chemicals of concern in its operations.
Target also expanded its policy to address PFAS as a class in textiles and has begun to make progress on flame retardants in children’s car seats.
Target also plans to screen for toxic chemicals that may be found in beauty products marketed to women of color.

What does Target need to work on? Here’s a list of suggestion from the Mind the Store campaign:

Expanding the list of flame retardants restricted in textiles, expanding the scope of textiles to include foam, and expanding the list of chemicals it is targeting for elimination in textiles and formulated household goods.
Target should also target chemicals of high concern in beauty products of environmental justice concern.
Target should eliminate and safely replace any toxic indirect food additives that may be in food contact materials, with special attention to any bisphenols and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that may be in food packaging and other food contact materials as well as any phthalates that may be in food and food contact materials in its supply chain.
Target should also eliminate plastics of environmental health concern (PEHCs) from its product and packaging materials in line with the timeline it has set for itself.
Target should publicly disclose the alternatives used to replace CHCs or PEHCs after eliminating them.
Target should also expand its policy to address other chemically intensive product categories such as electronics, baby, and children’s products/toys.

Sadly, as you get through this investigation, you’ll find that there isn’t a very big selection of what we would consider “best” ingredients and practices. So we’ve linked up Mamavation’s investigations on those same products so you can find more variety as you are shopping for your family. And we’ve also linked up these investigations so Target has a list of “best brands” to partner with in the future.

Almost all of this stuff is completely unnecessary and buying it only benefits a few. Whether or not it’s toxic or natural, all are made with chemical processes.

No one actually needs most of these products. Just stop buying this junk.
