Laundress Recalls List of Products for Unsafe Bacterial Contamination

The popular cleaning brand Laundress, owned by corporate behemoth Unilever, has issued a recall of several products due to potential bacterial contamination of Burkholderia cepacia complex, Klebsiella aerogenes and multiple different species of Pseudomonas like pseudomonas aeruginosa. This news came as a shock to Laundress fans who are now asking what to do with their laundry that was recently washed with this product.

In an alert to consumers, Laundress advised to “immediately stop using all The Laundress products in your possession. We have identified the potential presence of elevated levels of bacteria in some of our products that present a safety concern.” Laundress also said that the risk of bacteria being present on cleaned clothes is low, but they still recommend rewashing the clothing just in case.

The bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can contaminate growth on laundry and at elevated levels can cause an infection in the blood, lungs, and wound sites on the skin. This is especially problematic and dangerous to anyone suffering who is immunocompromised or sensitive. This bacteria is also resistant to antibiotics, which can increase the severity of anything that it comes into contact with, like infections.

Total List of Laundress Products Recalled

Over 8 million products from Laundress have been recalled. Products sold online at TheLaundress.com, Amazon.com, and additional websites. You may have also purchased these products in stores at The Laundress, Bloomingdale’s, The Container Store, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target, Nordstrom, Jenni Kayne, Kith, Peruvian Connection, N.Peal, Brooklinen, and other major retailers nationwide through September 2022.

Pay close attention because not all products will say “Laundress” on them. It looks as if Laundress could have potentially done some “white-labeling” of other products. That means all of these products are made by Laundress, but some of them will be labeled as another brand. Here is the full list of all the recalled products.

What To Do If You Have Been Using Laundress Products

So what should you do if you have any of these Laundress products? Here’s what they are recommending:

  1. If you have one of the products listed above, immediately cease using it.
  2. If purchased on or after January 2021, consumers can request a refund by using either a photo of the lot code with their initials and the date written in marker or a receipt.
  3. If purchased through www.TheLaundress.com, consumers can submit their e-mail addresses for a refund.
  4. If the recalled products were purchased before January 2021, consumers should take a photo of the lot code with their initials and the date written in marker and contact The Laundress for a full refund of the purchase price, with receipt, or of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, without a receipt.

Better Laundry Detergent

These brands are better but may contain 1 or 2 of the above ingredients. Most have naturally derived versions of certain chemicals and derive their scents naturally, and are clear of the worst of the “bad” chemicals. However, these are better products than those listed above and do not contain the worst offenders on the above list. That said, these chemicals do not pose a high risk but maybe something to avoid if you have sensitive skin, allergies, or are autoimmune compromised. One more thing to note about this section is it contains ALL additional “natural” brand that did not offer 100% fragrance disclosure. If we didn’t know what the fragrance was, we added it here.

Best Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

    I just found out about this recall and have been using Laundress for all of my family’s clothes 🙁 I use Nellie’s now-but would rewashing everything with that and vinegar be enough to kill the bacteria? Don’t want to throw all of our clothes away! Thanks for all you do
