Mom’s have a lot of things on their plates, and a lot of worries when it comes to their children. We worry if we child-proofed the house enough, if we’ve put on enough sunscreen, or if they’ll grow up to be contributing members to society. GMO labeling shouldn’t be one of them. The concerns of a mom are endless. I asked some moms what they care about when it comes to their kids and here’s what they had to say:
I want to raise kids that are kind… It was one of the things I did not anticipate having to teach my kids as a parent, but have learned that if we don’t, they just follow what they see and I can’t control everything they are exposed to. -Joanna Wooley, Mommy’s Slice of the Pie
Why are there so many sugary snacks available? The “healthier” snacks don’t taste as good or are crazy expensive. My personal favorite is when a teacher or adult gives my son a sugary treat right before sending him home. Geez… Thanks! -Maggie Unzueta, Mama Maggie’s Kitchen
Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs in the world, that’s no secret. But, there is a secret that’s making a mother’s job even harder– what’s in the food we feed our children. It’s our right to know so we can make an educated decision on what we choose to feed our families. Currently there is no requirement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food companies to label products containing GMOs, and that’s caused moms to take a stand.
Not only are companies such as Kellogg’s, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and General Mills not labeling their products to reveal if they contain GMOs, they are also working to conceal this information from the consumer, from you. Major food companies have spent upwards of $100 million on anti-labeling campaigns to keep us in the dark. There is even a bill that has already passed in the House called the DARK act (Denying Americans the Right to Know). It sets out to keep the FDA and states from mandating GMO labeling. The bill could also prohibit local governments from regulating the crops or banning them. You can tell the Senate to oppose the bill here.
With legislation stacked against us, it’s time for our voices to be heard. Sign the petition to support mandatory FDA labeling of GMOs and let your representatives know that you won’t be kept in the dark. Even if you aren’t personally concerned with the safety of GMOs sprayed with glyphosate, it’s about the right to know.
It’s About Transparency
It’s not just celebrities, it’s not just moms, it’s a majority of the U.S. population that want to know what’s in the food they’re buying. A recent study found 88% of Americans are in favor of mandatory GMO labeling. So why is Congress passing laws that are against the majority of their constituents? Perhaps it’s because of the millions of dollars spent by Big Food to prevent mandatory GMO labeling. Don’t let your voice, and the voice of millions of Americans go unheard because of companies who’d rather conceal their ingredients.
Everyone deserves to know what’s in the food they eat. Without information, it’s difficult to make the decision that’s best for your family. Many of these companies take pride in their honest and healthy image. Companies like Quaker Oats that portray a wholesome image should stand behind the quality of their product with full transparency. Moms everywhere are speaking up and demanding that these companies stop fighting to keep us in the dark. You can let your voice be hard too. Ask Kellogg’s, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and General Mills to Support Mandatory FDA labeling of GMOs!
Why do you want to know what’s in the food you buy?
