On Monday night, Dr. Sandy Gluckman joined us for Mamavation TV to talk about ways that parents can help to find the root cause of our children’s illnesses in order to avoid using the medications that we are starting to learn may create more problems than solutions.
One of the key elements that Dr. Gluckman explained was that medicine is treating the symptoms that our children are showing rather than finding the symptoms’ root cause. Then, the child may develop secondary issues like eczema or allergies because the “body is screaming” for help. When a child is diagnosed, it’s more like their symptoms have been compartmentalized, and there may be more issues accidentally ignored. She encourages us as parents (and teachers) to “Take Charge!”
So, how do we take charge? Dr. Gluckman has a three step program that has parents to:
Find It – In this first step, we must find out why our children are hurting. How has what has occurred impacted the child and then possibly brought on the symptoms we’re seeing? Dr. Gluckman talks of a “hurting spirit.” This hurting spirit often begins with stress and levels of cortisol in the brain.
Fix It – The second step of the program is to figure out where the child is hurting. Where is this illness manifesting, and what is the root cause? For many children (Dr. Gluckman suggests 85% of children), the digestive system is the most vulnerable area of the body.
Fire It Up – The final step is to figure out how we should parent our children so that we don’t create more stress for them. The way we respond to our children can escalate a situation to a more stressful situation. If we respond with stress, we create a condition where the child is producing more cortisol. At this point, the child can’t hear reason or logic. Now, the situation may be worse. Dr. Gluckman pointed out that when a parent’s own spirit becomes healthy, the children can become healthy — she calls this “spirit to spirit parenting.”
Each child’s vulnerability will show up in different places, so don’t expect that what works for one family is going to exactly work for yours. For more information, be sure to check out Dr. Gluckman’s book, Parents, Take Charge!
