Imagine there was an epidemic that was linked to the rising rates of ADD, ADHD, and Autism and it was affecting 1 in 3 children in the country. Then imagine you learned that this epidemic was caused by toxins inside people’s very own homes. What if lead poisoning was 100 times more likely than you’d think? You’d expect to hear about it on every news outlet and something to be done.
This epidemic is actually a reality, and it’s lead poisoning. Contrary to popular belief, this didn’t end when lead paint was banned. Lead is still very much in our environment and our homes. Lead poisoning can affect anyone, but it’s most damaging to children. One in three American children under 18 years old today has had an unsafe level of lead in their blood in their lifetime. This works out to more than 22,000,000 American children. (via LeadSafeAmerica.org)
Lead poisoning is an important issue, and it’s the topic of this week’s Mamavation TV. Leah and our guest will discuss the dangers or lead, where it may be in your home, and how to handle remodeling your home without releasing toxic lead into the environment.
WHAT’S MAMAVATION TV?
Mamavation TV is a weekly show that is hosted by Leah Segedie that is broadcast live on Google+ and YouTube every Monday night at 6pm PST/9pm EST. Each week the show brings a guest expert, panel, or community theme that will encourage or educate in the topics of activism, food, fitness, sustainable living, life, detox, and the Mamavation boot camp. Leah also presents the top food news of the week to keep you informed about what’s happening in the fast moving world today.
Our Guest This Week
Tamara Rubin
Executive Director, Lead Safe America Foundation
Tamara Rubin is an internationally recognized, award-winning lead poisoning prevention advocate and documentary filmmaker. She took on the cause of childhood lead poisoning when her own sons were poisoned by the work of a painting contractor in 2005.
Since then, Tamara has created a strong web and media presence for the cause of lead poisoning prevention, in an effort to bring this message to the world: lead poisoning was not “solved” with the 1978 ban on lead in residential paint. She is committed to educating every parent about this wholly preventable environmental illness that causes permanent brain damage in young children yet still today conservatively costs the United States more than $50.9 Billion annually!
Through her advocacy work, Tamara has personally helped thousands of families create safer homes and environments for their children. With her upcoming film, MisLEAD: America’s Secret Epidemic, she is working to further bring the issue to light. See the trailer below:
