Organic is better, scientifically proven! There is new scientific evidence from the Newcastle University in the UK that shows organic meat and dairy are healthier and more nutritious than their conventional counterparts. Way to go organic cows, and of course kudos to the farmers that raise them.
We’re big proponents of organic meat and dairy for a number of reasons. It’s free of growth hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, synthetic pesticides, and less likely to get you sick. But now there are even more scientifically proven reasons to choose organic thanks to some ground-breaking studies.
So just how good is this news? Very, according to agricultural economist and co-author of the study, Charles Benbrook.
We’ve learned that both organic meat and organic dairy substantially improve the healthiness of the mix of fats in the American diet. These benefits are largely due to how are animals on livestock farms are raised, and is very good news because it shows that relatively minor changes in livestock production practices can bring about important positive changes in public health outcomes. -Charles Benbrook
In the studies, organic meat and dairy had 50% higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic versions. Omega-3s are healthy fats that contribute to brain development and function. They can also help fight against heart disease, reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and relieve depression.
Along with the higher omega-3s, organic meat was lower in saturated fat. Saturated fats can raise LDL (the bad cholesterol) and pose a risk to cardiovascular health. Organic dairy was found to have 40% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than the conventional stuff. That stuff can reduce body fat, the onset of diabetes, and cancer risk. In addition to more CLA, organic milk had more minerals and antioxidants. Specifically, iron, vitamin E, selenium, and carotenoids. Carotenoids have been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
This was the largest study of it’s kind, citing more than 196 papers on milk and 67 papers on meat. It adds to the many reasons why organic is a better option for your health. If you still need more convincing on making the switch, check out all these other reasons to feed your family organic.
