Summer is approaching and that means it’s time to stock up on sunscreen! You need to protect your family from the sun’s harmful UV rays that can lean to dangerous melanomas and skin cancers. With the approach of hotter weather, you faithfully lather or spray sunscreen on your children. Did you know, though, that the sunscreen use you may be doing more harm than good? Is your sunscreen causing cancer?
In fact, your conventional sunscreen may not properly protect your family from the sun. In a study done last year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) concluded that only 1 in 4 of the 246 sunscreen products containing SPF provided effective and lasting protection from the sun.
Is Your Sunscreen Causing Cancer?
In addition to offering weak protection for your children’s delicate skin, brand name sunscreens can contain some harmful ingredients. Is your sunscreen causing cancer and other dangerous disorders. Here is a list of the most serious offenders:
Vitamin A (aka Retinyl Palmitate): Sunscreen Causing Skin Cancer?
WebMD reports that some doctors conclude there is a connection between this chemical and skin cancer. Back in 2011, there was some controversy over this so the FDA took a look. According to EWG, the FDA concluded that this form of Vitamin does “speed the development of cancerous lesions and tumors” in lab animals. However, they have not as of yet banned this ingredient, claiming that the animals are susceptible to tumors. The controversy continues, meanwhile, we recommend avoiding this chemical. After all, what is the point of using sunscreen skin if it puts you at risk of skin cancer anyway?
Oxybenzone: UV Filter and Endocrine Disruptor?
This acts as an effective filter for the sun’s harmful UV rays because it absorbs into the skin. According to Women’s Health Magazine, this absorption can also cause an allergic reaction that spreads and can last after the chemical is no longer on your skin. In addition, oxybenzone is suspected by some scientists to be an endocrine disruptor. These disruptors have been implicated in reproductive disorders, thyroid problems, immune system issues, metabolic disorders, and neurological diseases.
Nanoparticles: Questionable Safety & Ongoing Controversy
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe and effective in their standard form, but are generally too can be too chalky to be used in sunscreen. That’s where nanoparticle technology comes in – these are broken down into tiny particles many times smaller than dust, about 1/100,000th the width of a human hair! In 2013, Friends of Earth discovered that a particular type of nanoparticle titanium dioxide used in certain sunscreens may actually be causing more damage. There is debate as to whether or not these particles can enter the skin, as well. While EWG writes that they cannot, at least one study claims they can. As we reported last year, the Center for Food Safety believes nanotechnology is entering the marketplace without studies on their effects on our bodies.
Because nanoparticles exist at smaller than microscopic levels, their size and shape can interact with an organism in different ways. In addition, spray sunscreen can be inhaled and nanoparticles can be ingested this way. CFS is watching this issue over at their nanotechnology resource site.
Finally, some sunscreen contains the old culprits of phthalates and parabens (both are endocrine disruptors), toxic fragrances, and even alcohol. While conventional sunscreens do protect you from the sun’s damage, is it possible they are still harming your children with unsafe chemicals? Is your family’s favorite sunscreen causing cancer?
