Before you know it, the next presidential election will be upon us, and it looks like at least one of the contenders in this one may be a woman. At present, Hillary Clinton is the frontrunner for the Democratic Presidential candidate in 2016 and already is mounting support for her run.
But before you go championing Clinton as a candidate, you should know her position on a key issue in the news today.
Mrs. Clinton supports the widespread use of GMO’s.
Hillary Clinton & GMOs Today
In fact, the former U.S. Secretary of State was a keynote speaker at the BIO International Convention on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. She spoke out on her support for biotech firms, including how the negative press about GMOs should be spun by using better terminology and the right “group of actors.” According to the Times of San Diego, speaking of GMO seeds, Mrs. Clinton said, “I stand in favor of using seeds and products that have a proven track record.” She referred specifically to “drought resistant” seeds. What’s interesting is that the track record for drought resistant GMO corn is questionable. A 2012 Reuters article reveals a report by the Union for Concerned Scientists showing that the GMO drought-resistant corn provided “only modest results in only moderate drought conditions.” That, in fact, agrees with what USDA reported about the product in November, 2011 – just before greenlighting the crop in December, 2011. (Source: Mother Jones, “USDA Greenlights Monsanto’s Utterly Useless New GMO Corn”) So much for a “proven track record.”
While Clinton wants biotech firms to market the benefits of GMOs, she is ignoring the fact that their safety is largely untested. According to “An Unhealthy Truth,” by Robyn O’Brien, some of the Monsanto leaders instrumental in their development were concerned as early as 1994 that GMO soy might trigger and spread allergies. Another conference was held in 2002 to discuss this very topic, however, none of this stopped the production and marketing of GMO soy. Today allergies are on the rise, along with a host of conditions and illnesses, at an alarming rate in our families and on our children in particular. While we need more research into this issue, the correlation between the spread of GMO crops into our families’ diets is and the rise of allergies is noticeable.
Recently, we wrote about how harmful glyphosate can be for your family and how it is in our foods, our lawns, our soil, air and water. GMOs have been linked to allergies, cancer, autism, birth defects, reproductive issues, liver damage and more, but the research for these problem is scant or nonexistent. Will another Clinton in the White House bring even more GMO food into our lives?
The Clintons’ Past With Monsanto
The connection between the Clintons and Monsanto is nothing new. When Bill Clinton was in office, rBGH, a bovine growth hormone developed by Monsanto, was approved for marketing by the FDA. At the time, one of the FDA’s legal advisors was a former lawyer for Monsanto. Hillary Clinton herself was a partner for the Rose Law Firm, which represented Monsanto, but it’s unclear whether she worked for them. That said, her husband’s ties to Monsanto and the trend of putting former Monsanto employees or legal representation on government staff was certainly supported by President Clinton. Would Mrs. Clinton do the same?
Tell Hillary: No to GMOs!
It’s important to know that Mrs. Clinton supports the development and marketing of GMO crops. If she runs for president, families like ours need to stand together to tell her to dump Monsanto and promote organics over GMO agriculture.
What can you do? The Organic Consumer’s Association is working to acquire 200,000 signature on their petition asking Hillary Clinton to support public health and organic agriculture – and dump Monsanto.
Ready to sign? Sign the petition and then share with your friends and families who are concerned about the future of America’s food sources:
