Packaging Giant Lyon Magnus Recalls Millions of Nutritional Beverage Products
Packaging giant Lyon Magnus announced a voluntary recall of millions of nutritional beverage products, some popular products used as coffee creamers, for school lunches, or for tube feeding. The reason behind the recall is because of microbial contamination from the organisms Cronobacter sakazakii (the same bacterium that caused the recent baby formula recall) and Clostridium botulinum. Consumers have been warned not to consume any of these recalled products even if they do not look or smell spoiled.
Infections related to Cronobacter sakazakii are rare but include symptoms of illness including fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infection. Clostridium botulinum may cause severe food poisoning including symptoms of blurred vision, drooping eyelids, double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. Additionally, Botulism poisoning can cause respiratory paralysis, resulting in death unless mechanical ventilation is provided. This is especially problematic to people who are immunocompromised or have a sensitive constitution, who may be using these products anyways as a meal replacement.

Better Protein Drinks in Cartons
Because most of these protein drinks are in cartons, we’ve found brands for you to purchase in the meantime while this is cleared up that have similar packaging but are not being recalled.
The brand Mamavation is going to recommend has a unique history. In a previous consumer study, we found glyphosate in their vegan pea protein products. This brand was not the only brand. There was fraudulent organic pea protein coming from Chinese manufacturers and we stumbled upon it in our consumer study. This caused a stir in the organic industry and the USDA got involved to investigate. Since then, more organic pea protein manufacturers have come online in Canada (because it seems the problem was Chinese manufacturers), and we have retested this brand and it’s passed!
Please note that we never found glyphosate in organic dairy products, only vegan organic pea protein. So if you are using organic pea protein, we’ve saved you from glyphosate contamination because it seems as if the industry has mostly cleaned itself up since our investigation, especially if they are now manufactured in Canada and not China.
