A recent study has made every organic eater moan with frustration as they find out that phthalates, a hormone-disrupting chemical class, are just as commonplace in organic products as conventional products. Which brands were problematic and how is this even possible? Mamavation is hot on the trail investigating your food to help you make the best educated decisions for your family. You’ve trusted Mamavation to bring you topics like safest water filters to filter PFAS “forever chemicals,” safest oat milk tested for glyphosate, and safest cookware sans PFAS, now join us for coverage of a disappointing study that demonstrates a big phthalate problem inside organic dairy products & oils.

Defend Our Health Co-Authored Study on Phthalates in Common Foods For Children
A new scientific report co-authored by our friends at Defend Our Health published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology found a class of chemicals called phthalates in a range of popular children’s foods and organic products.
Phthalates are typically found inside plastics and undisclosed fragrances. When inside plastics, they work to make the plastic more flexible. When they are inside fragrances, they help carry the scent longer in the air. These chemical contaminants are found in many types of products that are involved in the food service industry like food service gloves, tubing used in dairy operations, hoses, holding tanks, and conveyor belts inside manufacturing plants. In fact, there are so many places where phthalates can show up because they are legal indirect food additives used in manufacturing for both conventional AND organic foods. There is some movement to restrict some ortho-phthalate chemicals from food packaging but not from manufacturing in general, which is most of the problem.
This is very problematic because phthalates are linked with hormone disruption of the endocrine system, which regulates the body’s hormones, even in trace amounts in low concentrations. Even though the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission restricted 8 ortho-phthalates in products intended for use by children, you still see these same chemicals approved as indirect additives in the food supply even when those foods are marketed to children.
“Exposure to these chemicals continues to be a cause for concern, and especially should be so for parents and caregivers,” said Dr. Kurunthachalam Kannan, senior author of the article. “One of these chemicals, for example, DEHP, on the list of restricted phthalates in the US and the EU, was present in every product that we tested. That discovery alone is a concern when we think about the cumulative impacts of chemicals in small children and pregnant individuals.”
What exact phthalate chemicals did this study look at?
Phthalates Tested For in the Total Phthalate Count
Here’s a list of all ortho-phthalates tested for in this study. Below we list the total amount of phthalates per product and it combines all these chemicals.
- DEP: Diethyl phthalate
- DIBP: Diisobutyl phthalate
- DPB: Dibutyl phthalate
- DPP: Dipropyl phthalate
- DnHP: Di-n-hexyl phthalate
- BzBP: Benzyl butyl phthalate
- DCHP: Dicyclohexyl phthalate
- DEHP: Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate
- DnOP: Di-n-octyl phthalate
- DPHP: di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate
- DINP: Diisononyl phthalate
- DIDP: Diisodecyl phthalate
Non-Phthalate Plasticizers Tested
- DINCH: Diisononyl hexahydrophthalate
- DEHT: Bis(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate
- DEA: Diethyl adipate
- TBP: Tributyl phosphate
- DIBA: Diisobutyl adipate
- DBA: Dibutyl adipate
- DBS: Dibutyl sebacate
- ATBC: Acetyl tributyl citrate
- DEHA: Di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate
- ESBO: epoxidized soybean oil
Other Types of Polymers Tested For in Total Count:
Here’s a list of the additional types of non-phthalate polymers that were tested for. We’ve reported the total amount of plasticizers, including non-phthalate plasticizers at the bottom of this post.
- PE: polyethylene
- PP: polypropylene
- EAA: ethylene acrylic acid copolymer
- PET: polylethylene terephthalate
- PVC: polyvinyl chloride
- SB: styrene butadiene copolymer
All of these chemicals are legal to use in manufacturing even if those food products are exclusively eaten by children. In fact, the FDA denied a citizen petition in 2022 demanding to take these chemicals out of the food supply simply because they impact the hormones of children. Doesn’t seem like the FDA is paying much attention to the science that isn’t bought and paid for by chemical companies.
Phthalates Are More Problematic For Children, Especially Boys
Phthalates are bad for everyone’s hormones, but scientists have recently found them to be more problematic for boys than girls. An article published in the Journal of Neurotoxicology investigated whether exposure to phthalates during pregnancy could affect the emotional and behavioral development of two-year-old children. The answer was a resounding YES, but those effects were observable for boys and not for girls at that age.
Similar studies done in the past decade have also found connections between phthalates calling them “gender-bending” chemicals. This study recruited women who were 11 to 18 weeks pregnant and analyzed their urine for phthalates (DEHP, DiNP and MBzBP) and then followed up with those children at the age of two.
What types of issues did all these studies on human children observe?
- Shortened Anogenital Distance (AGD) — This is the skin between the anus and the base of the penis. Earlier studies have shown that the AGD is twice in boys as it is in girls, which is because of the high rates of the hormone testosterone. This AGD difference is not as pronounced in little boys exposed to higher levels of phthalates in utero.
- Undescended Testicles — Children exposed to higher amounts of phthalates in utero are more likely to have undescended testicles.
- Changing Masculinazation — This is best described by Dr. Fred Vom Saal as an aversion to “rough and tumble” play or reduced aggression.
- Scored Lower in Personal & Social Development — These skills would include the ability to interact and communicate with others and they are worse among boys exposed to higher levels of phthalates in utero.
- Emotional Discomfort — This is where scientists looked at scales of emotional reactivity, anxiety, and depression and found those to be higher among children exposed to higher rates of phthalates in utero.
Here are some additional health impacts that have been determined through additional studies, some of which are on animals:
- Altered thyroid, progesterone, and estrogen activity in pregnant women as well as nonpregnant adults and children;
- Preterm birth, which may occur through disruption of endocrine pathways or other mechanisms such as oxidative stress and/or inflammation;
- Altered reproductive development;
- Altered neurodevelopment;
- may increase the risk of allergic diseases including asthma and eczema
- Can cross the placenta and are detectable in amniotic fluid;
- Altering placental development and function;
- Detrimentally impact the course of reproductive function, pregnancy, and fetal development;
- Alterations in infant/toddler development as well as parent-reported externalizing, internalizing, and autistic-like child behavior.
Mamavation’s Investigation on Phthalates in Everyday Products
Mamavation pulled apart the supplemental information in the study co-authored by Defend Our Health looking at phthalate content in everyday foods that are very popular among young children. Every type of food tested had levels of phthalates, but the levels were not the same. Therefore we created a few lines in the sand to help you understand what is happening and pulled apart the entire study product by product.
- Not Our Favorite Products — These products had phthalate levels above 100 ppb. There were many products that far exceeded 1000 ppb in the oil category. We’ve marked those products with a *. In other words, oils were the most problematic category found in this study.
- Better Products — These products had phthalate levels below 100 ppb and were not USDA organic. You’ll also notice some organic brands that had more than 50 ppb total phthalate content here as well.
- Best Products — These were USDA organic brands that had less than 50 ppb of total phthalate content. No organic or non-GMO oils made this list.

I’m confused, in another article you tested California Olive Ranch 100% California Extra Virgin Olive Oil
And it came back as “non detect”, but in this study it came back with incredibly high levels?
Anonymous
That was for PFAS, this is for pthalates.
Patty Cleary
Oh brother🤦🏼♀️

That’s amazing! They’re exactly what I was looking for! I thank you all for sharing these wonderful and satisfying experiences with me! Now let’s go with family and friends.
Sonia
How about for Enfamil NeuroPro Infant Formula Powder?! Does this have the same levels as the Enfamil Infant Formula Milk Based Powder with Iron?
Mandy
This is overwhelming. I was so shocked after learning about high lead levels in protein powder. I think it’s old news but it was new to me. Thank you for your diligence. I look forward to your next investigation.

It’s reassuring to see Mamavation’s commitment to investigating and raising awareness about the presence of phthalates in various food products. The detailed breakdown of products into categories like “Not Our Favorite,” “Better,” and “Best” provides valuable information for consumers seeking healthier options. By shedding light on the issue, Mamavation empowers individuals to make informed choices for the well-being of their families. Keep up the important work in advocating for healthier and safer food options! 👏🌱
Marthe Schulwolf
Thank you for doing all this amazing work! And for raising issues that are mostly being ignored elsewhere ( or at any rate in most of the information that we see as consumers).
I wish there was a way to compile all of the testing – for Phthalates, for PFAS, for pesticide residues, and whatever else we should be concerned about – and come up with total scores. Of course, if we had a regulatory system that truly was on top of things, we’d have that information. Personally, I avoid plastic as much as possible, but still end up recycling massive amounts of it (and I buy mostly organic). I always assume that plastic leaches to some degree. In fact, when I buy prepared food at the health food store, I bring my own stainless steel containers, so that a) I’m not using and having to recycle so much plastic, and b) it’s better in terms of keeping plastic out of the food (especially hot food, like soup). But avoiding plastic entirely seems simply impossible… I wish the brands themselves would address this. Of course, if some of this comes from things like tubing used in machinery, is there even an alternative? I guess we could all go back to making everything from scratch, but we know that’s not going to happen.
missnaja
It seems more accurate to say “No organic or non-GMO oils (THAT WE TESTED) were under 50 ppb total phthalate count”. I am curious also if you tested Chosen Foods Avocado oil as someone else mentioned. And coconut oils, specifically Dr Bronners. If you test more milk next year can you test Kalona and Strauss. Thanks!
Jay
Is it when oils are packaged in plastic bottles that imparts high level of phthalates and plasticizers?
Leah Segedie
You’re more likely to have higher non-phthalate plasticizers from plastic bottles. The caps may have a resin that has phthalates…that’s possible but also possible with caps made from metal…but the bottle itself unlikely.
Sandy
That’s why I only buy in glass.
char
Leah. Apreciate but wonder why so many canola, vegetable, and corn oils tested. So many of these reported unhealthy for other and many reasons for many years.But why not more olive oil and Avocado brands tested…as seems most people using olive oil or Avocado these days. And what about grass fed butter? Ghee? Thank you

I would like to see this too

Thank you for your work! Did you happen to test Bobbi formula? I would love to see Good Food culture cottage cheese as well!
Lauren
What should we use to cook food with if oils and butter have phthalates? I’ve been using chosen foods avocado oil.
Grace M
Is there any info on whether the plastic or glass bottled oils were tested? We buy CA Olive Ranch in glass and I’m wondering if its as high as it says
Jay
Is it when the oils are packaged in plastics that impart high phthalate and plasticizer levels?
Meg
I am so outraged that the organic/non-GMO industry has turned a blind eye to this, or worse yet, covered it up! This industry had gained the trust of families seeking safer and healthier nutritional products for their children and themselves. That trust has been shattered! Children have enough troubles these days without being sabotaged by their food!
RB
I am shocked. When I see brands I avoid doing better than brands I thought were safe, things are bad. Thank you so much for highlighting this. Time to reassess my pantry choices again.
Kp
Would you mind testing the Kirklands organic milk and enfamil gentlease formula?
Margie
Was Chosen Foods avocado oil tested? I’d love to know, since it’s one of the few that’s supposed to actually be avocado oil and not a blend.
Amy
I just wrote to California Olive Ranch. Do you think the cause of the phthalates in their oil is a result of the plastic bottle or from processing?
Veronica Cassamassino
It would be great if you could test the 365 Whole Foods brand.
Thank you!
Veronica

This may be a silly question, but does it matter if the oil is purchased in a glass bottle instead of plastic?

Thank you for all the valuable work you do. I have noticed that many people are purchasing lactose free whole milk, specifically Aldi’s Friendly Farms brand. Have you done any research on this segment of dairy products?

Thank you Leah for all your hard work!
So frustrating on what is safe to eat anymore.
I wonder about fresh raw milk from Amish farmers as well as their butter and cheese?
I would also love to know about coconut oil.
Healthy traditions in particular. They are an excellent company so I am hopeful.

Ok! What olive oil should we use?????
Leah Segedie
I’m looking into doing more testing. Hope to solve that problem OR at least know levels of brands.

Awesome, thank you!
How do you usually choose which brands/products to test?
I’m happy to donate some oil olives to test. Jovial is one I’m curious about.

Yes please test olive oils!

I’ve learned that no store-bought olive oils are good. Once they’re on a grocery shelf, they start becoming rancid. I hear that the freshest, best olive oil comes from online sources who can ship freshly bottled product immediately.

Thank you! Would love to see more info on EVOO. We try to buy from organic California certified evoo. But we eat so much I’m worried now about the ones we are consuming.

Right?! I’m devastated! I thought we were buying the healthiest olive oil with California Olive Ranch. 😭 We eat a lot of olive oil and now I have no idea what to get…
